1962 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88 Conv

For anyone interested in the 62 model year, I have posted a few pics of my ride, a Dynamic 88 convertible. She is named Saved 62, and sports all of 32,000 original miles on the odometer! In 2009 she got a new top, of gray cloth. She was also judged to be a 900 point car in the fall of '09.

The pics are here -

Thanks to all for the nice comments. I can tell you, we like, and are proud of her. She is a real joy to drive. Out on the highway she talks to me, saying, "Let's hit the open road and put the pedal to the metal!"

D. Yaros: Very nice ride, congratulations on the 1st place! Those are what we used to call "sleepies" on the hadlights way back, aren't they?

Aron,

Interesting. I must confess that I never heard them called that, but who knows what name was used in different parts of the country? We always called them cat-eyes.

In fact one may do a google search on "cat eyes" and get hits for the item. I would have never thought of, or ever tried to, google "sleepies." Wonder what that would yield?

And lest I get subsequently smacked down for excessive hyperbole, let it be known I never said I had or won a 1st place; only that I scored 901 points in judging. In that particular competition I was not good enough to place, or show, let alone win.

Saved 62 is the proud holder of a 1st place "People's Choice" award, however! I beat out a Studebaker, and the owner was more than upset that I was in the same orphan class as he! One of my better decisions enrolling in the orphan class -

I have done a bit of research, and for Google it all boils down to just how far back was "way back when"?

Google reports that "sleepies," in terms of headlights refer to rotating headlights which are opened only half-way or less. In fact, I found a bunch of after-market kits available to make these headlights work precisely that way.

Obviously my definition of "way back when" goes a bit further back than the time period when rotating headlights were introduced.

Back in my day, in addition to the look factor, cat-eyes had a practical purpose; preventing high beams from blinding oncoming drivers. But, the truth be told, people installed them for the looks, not practicality.

Here is a link to a site from where they may be purchased today -

So did you find out what the deductions were for in each catagory?
Are you going to try and "fix" them and get the point score up higher?

Yes, I was provided a detailed report informing me of the why behind the deducts. Am I going to try and fix them? NO!

Quite frankly, I just don't care. Saved 62 is for me, not the judges. Also, one judge's goose is another judge's gander. No way one can please them all. For example, points were taken off because the car has radial tires on it. Give me a break, please! Points were also deducted for not having the original battery. Duh, the car is 48 years old folks! Battery technology has changed a bit over the last 4 + decades. Hey, it is a Delco battery?

I just am not into the judging/points thing. I know what I have. So do most of the folks with whom I interact. That is enough for me.

Some of these Judges just don't get it when they get the opportunity to judge a Vehicle like this and knock the key Items that make the car so road able to-day.
I think we all have to step back for a moment and consider what we're looking at here and take note that these replacement items that get replaced and are as close to the real McCoy as possible considering the upgrades in the Materials in to-days original Parts. That's what this car should really be Judged on !!!
It' not like you Air Bagged the car and put 18 Inch on the front and Twenties on the back...

I hear you, loud and clear! The simple fact is, judging is subjective. That being so, there is no sense in trying to please all. It simply cannot be done.
