1972 Cutlass Corporate 10 bolt 8.5 into a 1967 442

1972 Cutlass Corporate 10 bolt 8.5 into a 1967 442

Hi All
I will be putting a 1972 Cutlass Corporate 10 bolt 8.5 with the notched cover into our 1967 442 so it looks like the P rear end.
The 442 has a P type rear end.
I have looked and the 1967 must be a bastard year. 1966 down and the 1968 and up. ???

What will I need to change if anything?

If your 67 originally came with a Type O axle (many did) then the later axle bolts in. The only issue is if your 67 used the flat lower spring mounts and retainer plate like a 66, in which case you'd need to use the springs that match the new axle. When you get it installed, carefully check driveshaft length. The various GM axles had different pinion flange-to-axle centerline dimensions, and the driveshaft could be up to an inch too long or too short.

67 rear

all BOP rear in 1967 -1972 were 55.25 wide backing plate to backing plate and or 61" over all drum to drum
ALL 67-72 spring perches are raised dome where the spring coil will fit over to hold it in place.

1966 was the last year for the flat perch bolr on cup to spring mounting.

The 1967 olds early years used the PONTIAC (P type 10 bolt cover as the performance rear... then in late 67 they went to the 12 bolt olds rear (12 bolt cover 10 bolt ring gear)

Brakes should all interchange,
U-joint is the same...

So really all you need to worry about is the drive shaft length for the swap.

Bolt in the rear before doing any drive shaft mods. Sometimes drive shafts and other drive lines parts get swapped over the years so you could very well have the correct length under the car ...check first. If not call your drive line shop and ask how they want the shaft measurements for cutting. DO IT THERE WAY, this way you get it correct.

Thanks Jim!

I was working on it last night and moving things around getting all the bolts ready to take out. Hopefully tonight I will swap it out.

With the car up in the air and wheels hanging, how much should the yoke be in the transmission?

I changed from a M21 to a short shaft T400 and the driveshaft that I have for it, I have about 1/2 if an inch of play. Should it be more?

Probably need to measure w the weight of the car on the driveline

Not "probably", DEFINITELY. The reason for the slip yoke is that it slips in and out of the trans as the rear axle moves up and down. You MUST measure at ride height, with the weight of the car on the springs.

5 stud, 4 3/4 bolt circle. 10 bolt. 1 1/16 bearing cup.

Pontiac 10 bolt 8.2 rear

That is a Pontiac 10 bolt 8.2 rear. Bolt in axles 28 spline

Cup size is 1 1/8 NOT 1 1/16" That would be CHEVY 1310 yoke
Yours is a BOP yoke with u bolts

What car is this rear in?

This comes out to a Firebird rear 2.78 ratio 1969 1968 Multi leaf rear...???

Neither 1 1/8 cups nor ubolts fit in yoke. I just tried a combo Ujoint that has both 1 1/16 and 11/8. 1 1/16 fits. Rock auto shows late 60s Firebird with inline 6 using 1 1/16 cups in yoke.
