I want to paint and upgrade my rear end. I have no experience and don't know if i should get it done by a pro. I want to put a posi unit and 3.42 gears around there I'm not sure. Can someone please tell me how this can be done and what to do thanks.

 

Taking the entire rear end out of the car is fairly simple.
I just took mine out for the first time and put a 12 Bolt Chevy in it's place with disc brakes.

Cost effectiveness sometimes is better to buy a built rear end and put it in though
VS buying all new parts and paying someone to rebuild it for you. There's always
cars sitting around with parts in them that need a new home.

Installation is a big deal. Getting the parts can save you money when you get deals BUT if they get installed wrong then all for NOT. They will be scrap soon there after.

A complete rear rebuild from companies that sell them could be the way to go again make sure there is a good track record.

DO not try to always find the cheapest priced rear and ASK question of the shop or builder ...IF they do not have good answer to your questions technical or other wise it might be good to PASS on it.

IF your rear is ORIGINAL to your car and this means something to you then rebuilding what you have is the way to go...PLUS if it is a drive and has basically no issues that is a good one to rebuild and put money into.

ALL open rears can be made into a posi as long as parts are available.

IF you want to experience the restore project first hand and like the aspect of hobby work then I certainly can help you set-up the rear on line with the help of all of us at the forum. IF you do decide to tackle this you must set aside a good amount of time as if you have never done this patients is your best friend. You may have to setup and disassemble the gears a few to many times to get the pattern correct.

Air tools will help - dial indicator a must, torque wrench a must, Bearing REbuild kit probably another MUST (it will have all the shims and marking compound needed to get the pattern correct.
