What are the market prices on the aluminum w27 rear ends now a days? Anybody seen one sell.?Thanks

 

I've seen them for sale from Fusick's and the Parts Place. I bought one for my Type "O" rear on my 69 for around $75 on sale from the Parts Place. I think Fusick's has them listed under $100.

 

you mean the whole rear end correct? A few years ago I saw a couple out there for 8k and 8.5k but I doubt they would bring even close to that now a days. I have not seen one for sale in a long time so not sure what they are worth. Most are cracked somewhere so you need to make sure its in good condition when you do find one. You don't see many out there and from what some folks say they tend to be horded.

 

I think he means the W27 aluminum third member. $4000-$6000.00. Trying to rack my brain on when and where I saw any listed. Ron Memmer had a NOS one a couple of years ago in the original crate, I believe he was asking $5000.00, seems like I saw another online (442.com?) awhile back for $6000.00.

Thanks guys,any ideas where they seem to crack if they do,any week spots in the rear end? Did they come with different ratios etc.Are there any articles out they about production numbers or axle codes? Thanks Again.

 

3 ratios available:

"SV" stamped on Passenger side axle tube 3.23
"SX" " " 3.42
"SZ" " " 3.91

Haven't ever seen any articles out there about them. Production numbers....who knows and everything you read on that is pure speculation. Still, it's apparent there were not many produced. I ran an ad a few years ago requesting people contact me if they had one, etc and it seemed like I was able to account for maybe 20-30 of them.

The one on racing junk is about 45 minutes south of me. But, a steep price.

they crack on the "ears" where the control arms go - though I suppose folks who raced these would be able to say if they cracked in other places.

 

If you're planning on putting some power to one,I wouldn't bother.Save it for the purist restorer.The last one I saw sell was about a month ago for about $4500.00.A few years back they were bringing about $6500.00. An NOS one in the crate for $10k.

 

The recent sale was an "as is" deal...the rear was unrestored, alum center section painted over with old black paint. Basically, the seller didn't touch a thing on it or clean it up, etc.....just sold it as he found it.

 

You are correct,sir. It was also found under a 67 Camaro. Yes,a Camaro.

 

So,I have a 12 bolt bop out on the floor, and a 10 bolt currently in the car a 72 cutlass convertable.I would like to make one or the other a posi,does the 10 bolt except 10 bolt 70-81 TA/Firebird or camaro posi assemblys? What is the best way to make the 12 bolt a posi? Any thoughts would be great,this is for just a fun street cruiser,not alot of power besides stock.Thanks

 

Building the original 8.5" 10-bilt that is in your 72,is the best bet.The parts are available anywhere,& the least expensive.There is NO sacrifice in strength.Those are great rears to build.The guts from a 71-81 camaro/Firebird,with an 8.5" 10-bolt will be a direct swap.
The 12-bolt O-axle can be done,but the parts are scarce & more expensive.Since your car did not come with one of those originally,it would also need a longer drievshaft.

 

Well wonder no more. Just so happens that I have been able to dig up production numbers on it. Part of my research at the GM Heritage Center. Though not the *exact* number, we can get pretty close:
Through June (meaning only July is missing), 351 made it into production and only 6 during the month of June. Based on that, I think that no more than handful made it in July, meaning that at least 351 and well under 400 is the number for the year.

Additionally, of the 351, 243 were in 442s, 31 were in 3200 series (so would have been F85 W31s and Rallye 350s), and 77 in 3600 series (likewise would have been Cutlass S W31s and Rallye 350s)

 

You would also have to include the Supreme SX, as it was also available with it, though I'm quite sure in very low numbers.

 

Wow, that's great thanks Kurt. I have always wondered how many. It figures, about 3 times more than the low number I have heard and about a third less than the high number I have heard.

Ordering info does indeed indicate that the W32 SX could be had with a W27.
But these production records show (though available) that none (as in zero) made it into production on a 4200 series. Though June at least, as I've said.

So I have a 10 bolt posi out of a 79 Trans Am,how do you figure out if its a 8.5 or 7.5 etc? It has 308 gears and my 10 bolt in the 72 olds cutlass has 276 gears? Will all the posi unit and gears fit in my cutlass or just the posi unit.I do know that I will have to get it set up ,or can I just swap the guts straight out? Thanks Guys.

 

The gears and the posi from the 79 TA rear will swap into your Cutlass housing.I can walk you through the install,or you can have a shop do it,as you will need to have the correct settings. If the TA rear is still together,take a pattern on the teeth,with some compound,& record the backlash.You will want to achieve the same when those parts are in the other housing. This is a great time to change all of your bearings & seals,since you will have the whole rear apart,but if you're doing it on the cheap,you will at least need a basic kit,with pinion & carrier shims.
