How can one tell the difference between a the stock 65 442 olds 10 bolt rear and a chevy 10 bolt?. Or just between a Chevy or Olds (BOP). Are there any external differences in they way they look, or are the differences internal only? I thought I had the stock rear, but the shop I brought it to to replace the rear gears it saying it is a Chevy Rear. I've never seen a Chevy with the "C" shaped cutouts on the cover.

Currently have no access to look for the stamped markings.

Olds really never had there own rear till 1967 12 bolt olds
The one you have pictured is a Pontiac 8.2 BOLT IN AXLE rear. Pontiac and Olds shared this rear.
Buick had the other 10 bolt 8.2 rear and GS was a real pain with larger axle bearings so watch out for that one.... Hard to get those axle bearings these days.
The rear you have pictured is pretty good and has plenty of aftermarket support.

Below is a chevy rear cover...
the BOP rears will always have bolt in axles in the 1964-1972 era just look for the oval round ish slug heads under the car back side of the backing plate axle tube flange area.... This indicates BOLT IN AXLES.
If the axle tube tapers down smaller from 3" to 2.5" the the flange it is likely a c-clip rear and is CHEVY type.

Thanks for the detailed response Jim, based on you info my rear is the BOP 8.2, not a Chevy as the shop is saying.
