have you actually opened it up to confirm what's inside?

If so, maybe guts were swapped out at some earlier point?

3.23 rato sr code

WELL THAT is not a bad ratio if you do have it and you can easily swap out the non posi to posi fairly easy with out any major tooling.

That ratio was common in the 71 72 years for the 442 cars so all in all it is a good all around ratio get too much steeper and free way driving will be a bit noisy from the RPMs.

Jim
As stated open up the rear to be sure that is truly what you have.

Thanks for the replies!

I spun the axle it went about 3 1/4 to 1 turn. Pulled the cover and gears are GM stampede 13/42 which comes up 3.23 when number is calculated

3.23 Posi or NO Posi

Well I would personally just get a Posi if that gear si set-up correctly and runs quiet. It is a fine gear for the street and strip action. All around great ratio.

clean that thing out with kerosene... Buy a Posi unit (PM will will price one out) NEW carrier bearings and a shim kit and you will be rolling with 2 wheel peel deal.

Before you remove anything take a BACKLASH reading with a dial indicator to know what to put the backlash setting back to with the posi installed.

If you not doing posi for a while just clean that cavity the best you can as is...hit with some kero and then brake cleaner and rag it to death and reseal and fill again. Drive it around and see if you like the ratio.

You can also get a power trax type unit which will give you posi action too with slight clicking in turns. Also have these PM for price. All they do is replace the open spiders and you do not remove anything else.
