I could use some advice on setting a price.

I have a an Olds Type O 12 Bolt (cover) 1970 axle to sell. It is in excellent shape all around. It is an open rear end. It has SF stamped on the axle tube. The housing has 402227, CFD 7 cast into it. The drums are included.

It is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it at the time you are ready to sell it. You could hypothetically say its worth $500 because you saw one like it sell on Ebay last week. But if a guy comes along and waved $400 under your nose, would you say NO? If it sat for sale for two months would you say no? (all hypothetically speaking of course) Additionally, LOCATION makes a HUGE difference in the price something is worth. If you are close to a track where guys are running them in thier cars, well you may get a little more (or less) for them. Out in the middle of the sticks? Perhaps not near as much as a big city..

Of course certian items demand a specified $$ amount based on supply and demand, or rarity of said item, but this wouldn't be the case for this type rear end. There is a guy on ROP (www.realoldspower.com) out of Erie PA ( i think) that builds rear ends for racing. He would have a better idea of value.

Yes, I agree it is worth what someone will pay, but of course that means if others have sold/bought one there is a price out there that would be a data point on which I could base my asking price on. As it is I do live near 2 race tracks. One is Raceway Park in Englishtown NJ and the other is a smaller track in Wall NJ.

Is Atco still open? or is that the one near Wall you are referring to? When I lived on McGuire AFB, it was 45 minutes or so to EITHER track. one was straight north and the other straight south. Hadn't heard anything about Atco in a while though...

It's only worth what some is willing to pay. I would think about 250-350 is all you would get. If it had a posi. unit it would be worth more maybe another 100 bucks.

 

70 cutlass s is pretty much on the mark I think and hope. I bought one a couple years ago w/o posi for $250. I will probably put it in my 72 Cutlass just to get the lower gears. I will not be racing the car so the lack of a posi is not a big deal. $250 was cheaper than changing the gears in my existing 10-bolt (yes I do know this is actually a 10-bolt with a 12-bolt cover). I think I paid $100 shipping so final cost is $350. I don't know that I paid market but that is a point of reference.

The racetrack in Wall is simply called the Wall Speedway. I think some folks call it Wall Stadium now...now sure why. I've driven by quite frequently, but have never gone in. I have been to Raceway Park however. Raceway Park is, I am told, bigger and better. I can also purchase 105 octane leaded racing fuel there for my car. Though it is quite expensive!!!!

 

Are you close to Oak Ridge,NJ. I will be getting the same rear from a guy out there,& I would take another,but I'm not sure if he can bring 2. His is also a 3:23 open.

 

By Google maps I am 66 miles south east. I live in Colts Neck, NJ. If I found the correct Oak Ridge then it is north of RT 80 just north of Rockaway; and that is the Oak Ridge I used in Google to map. From where are you coming?
