Rearend information

I have a 1965 Cutlass with a 10 bolt rear end, it has an SC on the housing which means it's a 308 open rear end it also has a single rib on the front of the housing. What exactly is this rear end and can you tell with this much information or do I have to tear it apart? I know there are Pontiac and Buick rear ends in these cars. Are the internal parts interchangeable on these rear ends?
I have also read that it's wise to change out the axle bearings as a precaution because there where a lot of failures on this type of rear end and that the axles where very hard to find, is this true or BS?
Any and all information on this rear end is appreciated.

I figured it out it's a 8.2 Buick rear end and the axle bearings are not hard to find.

Sorry, I've got a couple 1965's but don't know enough about the rear ends to comment. 507OLDS and monzaz both rebuild rear ends and I'm sure they could both answer your question. But apparently neither of them have seen your post. John

If you haven't found them yet a couple good places to go to for 1965 information is:

single rib = Buick. It will be a ten bolt 8.2" ring gear. The parts I just checked in the book interchange with the P type 8.2. Case (posi or open) changes between 3.23 and 3.55 ratio.

Yes,it's a Buick 8.2",and the axle bearings are readily available. One of the common problems with those axles is that the material of the shafts are softer, and the bearing can actually spin on the shaft, causing that area to become smaller, and no longer be able to hold the bearing or hold it centered, making the shaft useless.
