When installing the 31-spline units into a housing that originally had the 28-spline,the carrier bearings needed are LM102949(cone) and LM102911(cup). Do not confuse the LM102911 with the LM102910.They are different. I did this for all of my 70 W30 rears,& had custom axles made.
I still need to check my T3 rear.
What happened to your original? Is it damaged,or missing?

The casting number of my T3-coded rear is 402227. I believe this is a 69 rear.I have not had the shafts out yet,but that number tells me it's a 28-spline housing,or one that originally came with 28-spline axles & unit. The TO rear that is sitting next to it is teh same casting number. The only true/original 31-spline rears I have right now are both TW-coded 4:33.There are a few few visible signs on the outside of the pumpkins that could tell you that it has the larger bearing bores, but you might need a regular housing sitting next to it to tell the difference.
Just a tidbit of info: The 31-spline rears came in late-67/68 OAI equipped cars. Yes,your H/O would have came with one,but you already know that.

31 spline rears

I had a T3 original 3.91 rear there are NO external differences. The axle bearings are also the same size RW507 sealed bearing...31 spline is the largest spline you can fit thorough that hole. Bearing caps are cut for the A36 12 bolt chevy bearings or full size car carriers. 67 68 were suppose to be the only years with 31 spline and all will have sealed bearings...So if you pull an axle and it has a seal on the axle shaft it AIN'T no 31 spline rear... So 69 70 are definitely out cause they started using the A9 bearing and 712146 seal on the axles.

Wagon rears are larger on the flange end for larger bearings outer diameter in the 68 69 70 rears

65 66 67 the bearing was same outer diameter just the inner diameter which means the shaft was larger rw507ar or rw507ag... Buick GS also had these bearings in the 66 67 68 era too. AR AG bearings are really tough to get now a days ...

Jim,
There is a slight bulge where the tapped holes are for the carrier caps.It is very subtle, but slightly different than a 28-spline housing.Unless you had 2 next to each other to compare,I don't think you would notice.Yes,the 31-spline option came in late-67/68 OAI equipped cars,& they have the RW507CR axle bearings, just like the 28-spline. I converted my 70 housings/rears to 31-spline.They did not come that way originally.I wanted to have the SET-9 axle bearing design.I also did a 70 Vista rear before, with the SET-10 design,& had custom shafts made for that.
