GM 8.2" and 8.2" BOP?
GM 8.5" and 8.5" BOP?
Hello Olds Friends
Currently have a 72' Cutlass S, that I believe has a 8.5 BOP Axle configuration, has the "irregular shaped" cover (See attached photo).
I'm pretty set on putting in a Posi and upping the ratio to 3.55 or 3.73. I found some options like this one...

...which seem decent.
My question is, without removing the cover, putting it up on a lift, is there way to confirm that this is a 8.2 B.O.P?
Is the irregular shape enough? Any markings to look for?
Did 72s come with this option? for some reason I seem to see in some threads online that the B.O.P version was only up to 71'
Also, any other suggestions on where to get a package like the one listed above (Gears, differential, etc.).
Thanks in advance. Any help would be much appreciated.

I would recommend sending a PM to Monzaz ( Jim ) He is awesome to deal with and without a doubt will help you out with your needs, I have purchased my complete rear parts from him as well as many others here, I don't think you will find a better price anywhere, In addition he provides sound advice and unbeatable customer service.
A very Happy customer here!!

That is a 10 bolt 8.5 rear NOT a 8.2 rear. You can deal with phone jockeys or guys that actually build diffs. Like calling Summit or Jegs.... They rely on you to know what you have. You can get a great deal and sometimes a great headache.

ALL 71-72 Cutlass/442's came with the 8.5" 10-bolt.
They did have two different castings, which resulted in two different covers. Both styles also have bolt-in axles. They do not have c-clips.
A complete kit will be about $625.00 with the shipping. This includes the posi unit, gears, installation kit,and all of the bearings & seals to rebuild the entire rearend, including the axle bearings/seals.

Summit, JEGs...rarely.
So do you know if this, mine by the picture, would be the B.O.P version? Make a difference. Just curious.
Do you package up kits? Have some documentation you could share? Type of Posi, gears, etc.?
Thanks Jim

Here are the covers...
Again I say you can go cheap on parts but if you are needing help with questions and making sure you have the correct parts you should buy from a drive line shop so you can get the help you might or might not need. Most places sell the part BUT very few install what they sell and actual USE what they sell in there customers cars.
So that extra money goes toward peace of mind also.
photo to the left usually called the BUICK 8.5 and the photo to the right is usually the Olds 8.5. Jim
Good luck -
