Driveshaft Concerns
#41
Got it all put together tonite with new straps and another rear U.S. made U-joint. Was able to save the TR bolts. The bolts sold with the strap kit were about 3/8 shorter than the originals and I just don't want to take any chances.

i'm going to be doing my driveshaft for good measure this week. my new u-joints are in the mail.
how do you know whether i'll need pressed in clips or inner clips?
I find this all very confusing, i know i need to torch out the old nylon retainers.
As always, standard TH350 driveshaft with open 2.73 axle..

Google U-joints and it will be very clear to you. Both styles get "pressed" in. If you have never performed a u-joint service you tube it. There are some things you need to be careful of and various dos & donts. One example is there should be no bind in the joint once the new joints installed. How do you fix it if it has bind etc...Do not get any dirt in the new cups. I like to repack the cups with my favorite grease. Especially the non grease-able joints. There is a couple of different approaches to removal & installation. Sometimes you have to burn out the originals if they are held in with the plastic injected retainer. Sometimes a vice will work well sometimes a 20lb sledge will work better. Be careful not to whack the shaft or the yoke.
The other option is find a drive-shaft shop and for $20 they will install them.

I believe different assemblies are different.
I will admit I never really thought about it - I just go to the auto parts store and ask for a joint for my car, and the one they give me fits and has the right clips.

I just read the beginning of this thread. it's the same one Joe purchased for his car. It says the same U-Joint was used by GM until 2007??
