Corporate Rear end

I am planning to upgrade the open rear end to anti-spin/posi in the near future in my 71 442. Is there any difference between Auburn and Eaton units? Is one more desirable than the other when considering durability, price or replacement parts? I want to confirm that this car would have a 28 spline axle. Thanks.

Hasn't anyone faced this question before? Are they the same type of unit?

I was leaving it for the experts to answer, but since no one has chimed in I'll try.

The Auburn is a cone style and the Eaton is a clutch style. This site shows the differences:

Most folks prefer the Eaton clutch unit as it is easily rebuildable and more importantly appears to be more reliable/stronger.

If you have the original rear, it has 28 spline axle shafts.

Thanks for responding. I am ready to make a decision on buying a unit soon. I checked with local suppliers in my area, east coast Canada, and all of them carry Auburn. If I want an Eaton, it is 110 more and I have to have it shipped from Memphis at a considerable cost. They stock the Auburns and they have had no problems with them. My car is virtually stock with mild upgrades and I will be lucky to drive it 1,000 miles a year. I'm 61 so the advantage of being able to rebuild it isn't an advantage for me obviously. So, I value your opinion and will probably go with the Auburn. Does the Auburn's design give any advantage over the Eaton? Does one chatter more than the other etc.?
Would part # 542016 be the correct for my 442 with the 28 spline axles? Thanks again.

Brian,

I purchased my Yukon/Eaton Posi and 3:42 gears + install kit from Monzaz, had him ship them to me in Ontario. I believe the Yukon is a mirror image of the Eaton posi. Perhaps Jim can chime in on this.
I've had them in the car for a few years now, moves my huge 76 cutlass along with no problems.
Jim was awesome to work with and packaged everything up in a way to save on shipping.
I couldn't be happier!
Hope this helps
Eric
