can i put a 73 el camino rearend in my 1970 cutlass

like the title states can i put a 1973 el camino rear end in my 1970 cutlass?

looks to be a 10 bolt rear end in the el camino.

want to put a posi in my cutlass and it looks to currently be a 2.56 peg leg.

This is what I found on my olds rear end r2 stamped on the front side of the passenger tube.

carrier has 402227 cfd5

any help is most appreciated.

or what would it cost to update the current to a locker wiht 3.73 or 4.10

Sorry but no, the 1973 is wider and the ears on the center won't line up with the upper control arms. If the price is right, you can buy it and pull the posi carrier out of the 1973 housing to use it in a 1971-72 Cutlass housing.

But for your 1970 the factory rear end was the type O and parts are not as available as other rear ends. You may try contacting Jim who goes by monzaz or Brian who is 507OLDS as both of these members buy/sell/trade and restore rear ends. I believe that at one time Jim was having posi carriers manufactured for the Type O rear end. One of these guys may have the parts to convert your rear end over or have a complete rear end with the posi setup already in it.

There's been a lot of discussion about what will fit under which years as most of us want to upgrade to the posi, or as Oldsmobile called it the limited slip rear ends. If you have time you might go through the section of transmissions/differentials and read through some old posts. If you have an idea what will fit your car, then scour Craigslist within commuting distance and watch the local wrecking yards. If you know ahead of time you can pull the trigger when you come across a good deal. But don't hesitate to ask if your not sure about applications.

The "6" in the sixth position shows this to be a 1966 model year car. In any case, the J88 is a B-body. That won't fit either.
