Buick and Chevy 10 bolt question

My B.I.L. has a 67 Skylark with a peg leg 10 bolt rear.
I have access to a 67 El Camino 10 bolt and a posi unit for it. $150.00

Both will need gone through so..............

Is there an advantage to the Chevy rear other than convenience?(rebuild Chevy while still drivable)
Cost? Strength?

Thanks!

PLUS and Minus

Wel the Buick rear will take the pontiac gears and be a bit stronger than the chevy and more expensive to rebuild. Especially IF your swapping gears.

Chevy gears are cheaper
Bearings are about the same
Axle bearings are cheaper in the chevy by 1/2 the price

What ratio are you going with OR are you just using them in stock form?

Please confirm the build specs you want i will price them out for you.

How much power are you going to stick these rears with?
What will your intentions be in driving the car? (race cruise street strip etc)

He (my brother in law) mentioned 3.73 gears and I believe he will take it to the track now and again but not regularly. More street than strip.

Its powered by a nice running BBB 455. How much power I don't know.
Thats about all I got.

power

Well that is all on him as far as keeping the rear alive. If you go to the track with slicks and higher stall or stick shift I am sure it will not be long before you start to have issues. ON the street as long as you recondition the rear NEW bearing and such preloads and backlashes set right you can get a good long life from either rear.

Waiting to find the brand of posi unit. It is suppose to be rebuilt.
Would it be obvious to someone who knows if the posi unit is rebuilt?

Also I am under the impression that all A body rears interchange and that the widths of 65-67 are all the same? true?

thanks!

widths

65-67 same width BUT some Pontiac buick and olds are 1 " wider in the 1967 and even late 66 in the Pontiac rears.

64-66 should be all the narrow 54.25 flange to flange.

Send a picture of the posi unit. IF the unit has been run there will be no real way to tell if the unit has been repaired or rebuilt. You can however tell if the unit is whooped. Look at the spiders for galling etc dent in the teeth etc. If so it is definitely OLD. Jim
