What are you guys running and where is the best place to buy for sure the gears. I think my father in law has a dura gip I am going to put in. Im thinking 3.90's, going behind a 455, 425 heads, 10.5 comp, and a decent street cam with a 400 switch pitch. After I get some miles on it I want to put a late model T-56 6 speed in it. We have two members here that rebuild and sell rear ends. I believe either one of them could answer whatever questions you have. That would be Brian (507OLDS) or Jim (monzaz). I know there's at least one old post where a member posted a link that will help you calculate your rpm when you plug in your gear ratio and tire height. So if you have time you may play with the search function to see if you can find it.

No trouble or problem on my part, I have hit the slow stage of getting the car finished since I'm short on funds for building the motor, so no rush, I don't go up there much anymore is the only problem, partial laziness lol

 

My father in law has a cone style dura grip from his Buick, if his Buick had a bolt in axle 10 bolt (1970 GS stage one) would it be the same carrier? Ill get picks and numbers off it too when I get up there

 

Ok all pontiac rears cam ewith Auburn Coner style units 2 spider gear and 4 spider gear heavy duty. 1964-1967 were all interchangeable from Buick Olds and Pontiac rears.

In 1968 Buick re engineered there 10 bolt 8.2 rear with larger driver side carrier bearing and ring and pinion gear set with a totally different lower pinion to ring engagement. SO all 68-70 gears from Buick rears are all their own NON - Interchangeable same with the posi only 68-70 posi units from gm will interchange into this housing.

NOW - you can take the Buick 68-70 posi and make it fit Pontiac 1970-1972 rear end with 7/16" ring gear bolts as long as the ratio fit the carrier series.

So as you can see things can be interchanged but you really need to pay attention to details...

So the answer to your question is NO you can not use your dads 1970 buick posi into your older 1964-1967 housing and gears CORRECTLY.

We sell NEW posi unit for your diff...Just need the info to get you the right unit. And as for using used parts as is with out a reconditioning etc. is probably a waste of time as these units are well over 40 years old and are probably not working correctly by now. They can be reconditioned and made to work good again ...but if you keep them going too long running incorrectly they will fail and blow up making a mess of everything else in the housing.

If I am measuring the ring gear, do I measure from the outside edges of the teeth from the mounting side of the gear? If so it measures 8.5". I brought the ring and carrier home with me
