65 vista cruiser rear axle question
65 vista cruiser rear axle question
Could someone please assist me in telling what my rear axle spline would be and possibly the gear ratio for my 65 vista cruiser? It does not have a posi unit. I am thinking of changing the gears to 3:42, or 3:55 and a limited slip unit? Any thoughts? Thanx!

Hi Rod
If the gears inside haven't been changed there will be a code stamped in the axle tube, passengerside usually on the back. That can be keyed out as to the gear ratio. I'm not an expert, but I believe I've read these have 27 spline axles. Someone who knows for sure will have to comment.
There's several ways to verify the gear ratio. But my favorite is to remove the inspection cover and if they are GM gears there will be a ratio stamp in the ring gear. Something like 41:13 which would mean 41 teeth in the ring gear and 13 in the pinion. This will also allow you to change the oil and inspect to see if there's any metal shavings or hints of problems.
My guess would be factory gears are likely 3.23 to 2.56, but you'll have to verify that to be sure.

axle info
ALL 10 bolt 8.2 axles BOP are 28 spline (ALL)
They are all BOLT IN AXLES
Gear ratio you will need to open the rear and read the ring gear edge as state in the post or two before mine.
3.08 3.23 will usually be the wagon ratios for towing and because the vehicle was heavier and need ethe gear to get moving off line torque.
Aftermarket posi units are available for the 2.93 3.08 3.23 / 3.36 3.55 3.90 4.33
Master rebuild kit is available for the rear also
Axle bearings could be touchy as they are getting to be obsolete. RW507A and later RW507G
