400 TRANS.
I know that my 76 came stock with one but was told that was due to coming from the factory with a tow package. It also came stock with 15 inch rims as opposed to 14's. But this was I think an option but Joe P may know for sure.
The 455 was available through 1976 and the only automatic offered behind that engine was the TH400, so yes, the TH400 was available through 1976 at least.
Anyone who wanted a 400 behind a 350, could have easily ordered it. The salesman would have the checked the proper box on the order form, and added the extra charge to the total bill.
Why anyone would, is a topic for a different thread.

Be careful, however, to not confuse the TH375 with the TH400. The TH375 was a lower-strength version of the TH400 and was usually used behind small blocks. As an example, I had a 68 Vista that came from the factory with a 350 and TH375. It looks like a TH400 externally, but is not as strong. Note that in 68 the TH350 was not yet available and lesser small blocks got the Junkaway two-speed (aka the ST300). The beefier TH375 was used in the heavier Vista and the 350-powered 88s.
