1965 Cutlass/F85/442 10 bolt bop type?
Hi all,
Just curious which type BOP rear axle was used in the Oldsmobile A-bodies, I've read several places listing they used the Buick or type-B casting, but recently seen a 442 axle that looks like a Pontiac or type-P casting.
I believe the axle in my 65 Lansing built Cutlass has a type-B, makes me wonder
Regards,

B or P
Usually the rule of thumb is the Pontiac version is saved for the Higher performance set-up cars and the B was for the basic a-b cars.
Buick will have a single lower webbing rib from pinion to the part where the axle tube is pressed into the housing.
Pontiac 1965 had a vertical rib next to the passenger side of the pinion and the 2 lower webbing ribs (casting will be on the bottom of the center section housing)
Pontiac 1966 - 1972 will all have diagonal converging upper ribs and 2 lower ribs.
Hope that helps.
I have some examples on the JD Race and Restoration web sight under ID Differential.
Some changes need to be made to some of the part numbers and other things that have been learned in the last few years but pictures should help alot.

Hi again,
I guess I wasn't clear, but more curious what was the reason 1 got type-B vs type-P, going with your explanation all 442's should have type-P, but is this the case?
Was it the way a car was optioned, supply, or something else that determined who got what.
Thanks for the response,

Hi again,
Found most of the answer in the assembly manual:
Not sure how readable but here is where I found it in section 3
