12 bolt R2 axle code??

Looking at other discussions, an R2 code is a 2.56 ratio. What kind of car would that have come out of? Also is it common for the axle code stamps to be upside down?

And the 2.56 ratio was common on 68-72 Cutlass and related models.

The 2.56 ratio was the base no-cost option for several years, so yes, it is very common.

I'd say it's common for the axle code to be upside down. A 2.56 differential would be the choice to improve gas mileage. I've seen them in a lot of F85 and Cutlass 350/2bbl cars. I also saw a 2.56 once in a '68 4-4-2 Turnpike Cruiser.

The 2.56 ratio Type O was first offered on the 1967 Turnpike Cruiser package (RPO L66), where it was the standard axle and was ONLY available with L66 that year. For 68 it was again standard on the Turnpike Cruiser and also on the F85 with the 350 2bbl motor, but was optional across the Cutlass line. Note that it was only offered with automatic. For 1969-70 it was also typically standard on the 350 motors in the Cutlass line with AT and was optional on the others as well as on the 442 with automatic. 1970 was the last year of Type O production.
