1968-1970 Cutlass Convertible Engine Options?

1968-1970 Cutlass Convertible Engine Options?

I'm new to classic oldsmobiles. Is there a reference online or otherwise that lists the different options that were available for each year? What were the engine options for the 1968-1970 convertible? Was the convertible offered with the 455? Any help would be appreciated.

Going backwards if memory serves that 1970 GM lifted 400 CID limitation on A bodies so anything after 70 had the option for a 455. Also in 70 you could only get a drop top in a Supreme body.

As far 68-69 you could have an action line 6cyl, 350 2bbl,350 4 bbl and maybe 400 cid someone will correct me if I am wrong on the 400 option.

In fact, the only engine available in the '68-9 Cutlass was the long stroke "G" 400. Pretty sure not available in a Cutlass Cutlass [as opposed to a 442 type Cutlass].

Technically, those '68-'70 442's were not "Cutlasses" though their body tag says otherwise- for Lansing cars at least. And, they look like a Cutlass, in general.

The convertible body style is immaterial. Convertible, post car, or Holiday, the same engine selecton was available.

Engine offerings were unchanged from 1968, but a new three-speed Turbo Hydra-matic 350 transmission was added to the option list and available with all versions of the 350 cu in (5.7 l) Rocket V8, including the standard two-barrel 350 cu in (5.7 l) version, four-barrel "Ultra High Compression" 310 hp (230 kW) option and the W-31 option, conservatively rated at 325 hp (242 kW).[3] The old two-speed Jetaway automatic was still available with the Chevy-built 250 cu in (4.1 l) "Action-Line" six or the two-barrel 350 cu in (5.7 l) V8. The Turnpike Cruiser two-barrel 400 cu in (6.6 l) Rocket V8 was dropped and the four-barrel 400 engine from the 4-4-2 was available only in the Vista Cruiser wagons.

Thanks. There is a 1968 Cutlass convertible for sale locally with a 455. Before contacting the seller, I wanted a little more information. It appears safe to assume that the engine could not have come with the car originally.

You are correct. Only the 68-69 Hurst Olds had the 455 in the A-bodied Oldsmobiles of those two years.

The turnpike cruiser option was available in '68-69 on the 442. 400 two bbl. 290 hp auto, 9.00:1 compression.

68 and 69 Cutlasses definitely did not come with 455s. There's a good chance that 455 was transplanted from an early to mid 70s big olds. If you do look at this car and want to know as much as possible before buying it, take some good pics and post them here. Also get the numbers from the block and letter from drivers side head as well as VIN and cowl tag numbers. Good luck!

While not original, a 455 would be a nice upgrade if done well on an otherwise basic '68 vert. Also see what transmission is being used since it may have been swapped along with the motor. A TH400 works well with the 455 assuming it's an automatic and easy to ID transmissions based on pan shape if you look online.

The 455 could also be out of the Delta series of 68 and 69. These motors were red, whereas the later ones were blue. Engine ID on my 455 begins with 39x ...

As you probably know, the X signifies the Fairfax, KS assembly plant, which only built B/C body cars in those years.

If you are not interested in buying the 68 convertable with the 455 let me have the guys info I would be very interested in buying it. I own a 69 Cutlass Classic S Holiday Coupe convertible that I am making into a Hurst clone.

Welcome, but you are responding to a thread that's a year old. I'm guessing the car being discussed is long gone.
