Ok guys I need your input, I'm thinking of converting my '66 Cutlass with buckets and a console to a Muncie 4 speed. What do you think? Has anyone done this who can give me a heads up on what to expect? Thanks for the input!

 

Before you get too excited, check the back of the crank and see if it is machined for the pilot bearing and trans input shaft. I had a 67 442 and every motor I put in I had to take to the machine shop and have them drilled.DH

 

Since the factory made manual transmission cars on the Cutlass/442 chassis in 1966 you should be able to get all the componets to make the swap as used or repop parts. Yes as DH said most of the Oldsmobile engines were not drilled for pilot bearings so that potential problem will need to be addressed. If you have time use the search option on this site look for threads on automatic to 4 speed conversions. A lot of guys have made the swap and there are several threads on this site that go into detail on what needs to be changed and potential problems to look out for. John

There are two problems you will face. First is the lack of a recess in the crank for the pilot bearing, as discussed above. The second is that the bracket on the frame to support the outboard end of the clutch equalizer shaft (AKA, the "z-bar") is welded to the frame on the 64-67 cars (it's a bolt on for the 68-72 cars). You can get a repro of the bracket, but you will need to weld it on.

 

Having just completed this conversion on a 71 car, it is a lot of work and if you have to pay to have it done-- It ain't cheap
