1970 Cutlass/original or repo
I am tinkering with buying this car. Same owner since 1976. Not driven in last 10yrs. But inside under a car cover. It took me 4 yrs to convince him there was/is no such thing as a W31 convertible in 1970.
Anyhow, it's nicely loaded..a/c, his/her, gauge package, power seat, windows and locks, sport wheel, am/fm, & so forth. I can get the W31 emblems removed. It also has the W-25 set up.. is there any way to tell if repo or original from pictures? Or do you have to have the documentation?
Thanks in advance.

You can tell if close up pictures of the holes in the air cleaner base. The foam seal looks like a repo, too good of condition and a greyish color. It is a nice looking car so as long as you are not paying W31 money for a car that never existed I'm not sure I would worry about if the air cleaner was real or not. The 55 also denotes an original color of Galleon Gold, the car has been repainted Twiight Blue the A is for a white top and I'm pretty sure 997 is pearl interior That would have been a unique combination.

There are many improper markings, no doubt about it. W31 did not rest below 442 emblems but "Cutlass" emblems. And yes, the door emblems are incorrect. At minimum, if I acquire it would to rid the car of the W31 markings, then decide to whether to drop a 455 in it to make it a nice clone 442 driver. I frankly would be more attracted to it if it was represented just what it was meant to be...a nice convertible cutlass.

The data plate indicates a Supreme, not a 442. Nice looking car with lots of options. Same owner since 1976? I'm sure they know all about the upgrades and add-ons.

Doing some home work on the seller, thus my questions. Remember, this guy took a while to convince it was not a W31, so I am guarded in what he says about anything.

it's a repop.
1970 cutlass supreme convertible small block car. not original color. not 442, not W car. with questionable options probably added by owners.
should be priced accordingly with a little extra for the options added.

I will keep you posted if added to the flock or decide to sell it afterwards.
i am in the process of confirming ownership for 40+yrs and claim he bought it from the original owner. Claims the car has 41k original miles.
It would clean up and look brand new.

It a great looking car - of course I'm biased. For the right price I myself am not all that worried about history. I'm looking at a 70 Cutlass convertible for my sister that has 71/72 sport mirrors, door panels and turn signal stalk. Who knows why, but for the right price it doesn't matter to me. Some of these cars had plenty done to them within the first few years. Bob Andersen down in Tampa showed me a one owner 70 Cutlass from a local older women - complete 71 front end from a collision repair in 72 or something like that. Purists may go nuts but if you like the car and its the right price - buy it.
