what rear end ratio came in a 72 Cutlass

What rear end ratio originally came in a '72 Cutlass with a 350 engine ? I'm going to put a 700R4 in mine and don't want to have to change the rear end, but am concerned it could be too low for the overdrive.

I've had three '72 Cutlasses (350 2v, 4v and 455 4v) and all came with a 2.73:1 ratio. Of course, you'll have to check to make sure.

Wildaboutcars is a great source for that info and plenty more if you register.

The most common ratio I've seen in 72 Cutlass's is 2.73
with 350's and 455's but like 72 w29 all green said you'll have to check to be sure.......

Thanks to all. If it is a 2.73 it will never work with 700R4. Been there, done that. I'll start looking for a set of 3.42's. Thanks again

That's interesting because in 72 the 2.56:1 gears weren't offered for any of the A bodies, however it was the standard gear for 1971 CS with AT. Is your car by any chance a very early production car? You can tell by the VIN and the cowl tag build date.

I also had 2.56's in my '72 Supreme (so I was told by my mechanic. I never counted teeth). She was built in Nov '71.
