What to do with the trunk

Finally got the '72 Cutlass Convertible on the road for the first time this year. Better late than never. My dad use to have a bunch of carpet, cardboard, and other crap in the trunk. What is the propper way to cover it? Not concerned with stock appearance but more concerned about not having things ding the quarter panels.

I never had any problems with dings. My concern is with moisture.
Water gets in one way or another, and if there's anything absorbent in there (like carpet or cardboard), it will hold water and encourage rust.

Less is more.

I try to tell my dad that all the time but he always keeps crap in the trunks of his cars. Thick **** carpeting is often the case.

Just spray some spatter paint after a thorough scraping and sanding and be done. Any mats will only give you headaches down the road.

The idea is not to have sharp heavy things in there that aren't bolted down, like the jack. Use a Rubbermade tub for your junk; keeps it clean and easily removable.
