So looking at the VIN, you can eliminate if NOT, easier than is? My old guy had notes that referenced and trying to verify- and adjust.
The VIN 36870Z101995. I know that the motor was swapped, but trying to determine if the base car was W31 as he thought he bought years ago. The body shop guy also is giving info. Car was bought locally some years ago.

X2, "M" Lansing only for W30 & Ram Rods in 68. There are other small telltale details to 68 W cars.
Now it was possible to purchase W parts over the counter in 68 or anytime from 68 on. Everything is a bolt on except the engine specifics....which technically bold on too but not like control arms sway bars shocks axles et al...
Other than a M in the vin, rock solid paperwork is definitive and required if one wishes to extract W30, or Ram Rod (W31) money from a proposed authentic car.

It's a Fremont car. It CANNOT be a W31. There is no way to prove a car is a W31 from the VIN, as there is nothing in the VIN that would indicate the W31 option. There is nothing on the cowl tag either.
Production W-cars and Hurst/Oldses made ONLY in Lansing is "4imprint Certain". Full stop.
M for the Lansing build plant in the VIN, but still doesn't guarantee it was a W-car or Hurst/Olds without other verifying factors. But you can eliminate it as a W-car or Hurst/Olds "4imprint Certain" if it was built anywhere BUT Lansing.
Is this in regard to the car currently for sale on eBay? There's a Black/white 1970 W31 for sale that looks like it doesn't have the original engine. The valve covers are the script kind from 1973-early 74, it has an Edelbrock intake with a block-off plate for the EGR, and it has #8 heads on it. The engine is probably a 1973. That would mean that all the W31 engine specific parts are not there. Still a nice looking car though.
