Transmission swap
There would be extensive & expensive $$ amount of work needed to put a manual transmission in this vehicle.
Why not just put a 2004R (4 speed overdrive) trans in the vehicle? It would almost be a direct bolt-in.

There are a lot of posts over on gbodyforum.com that go through various manual transmission swaps available for your platform. This forum skews heavily towards automatics.
Not sure if the 307's have the same issue as earlier Olds V8's, but I'm guessing they are also not drilled for a manual transmission pilot bearing. That's a fairly large barrier to entry on a manual trans swap if you don't plan on removing the crank for a rebuild. If you are rebuilding your engine, or just removing it from the car, it's not that difficult for a machine shop to machine the correct bore into the crank for the pilot bearing and input shaft clearance. I just had that done on the engine I'm building.

x2 I agree, chime in on a Buick GN forum tons of info...I have a modified 200-4R in the 64.
Okay so the car needs a new trans anyway ( I'm getting a metal scraping sound whenever it tries to shift to second) is the trans I should be looking the 200-4r? Or should I be looking for something else? Thanks
The cheapest thing to do would be to get a Muncie, a Parts Place manual transmission conversion kit or a hydraulic clutch kit. You'll need a shifter and a bellhousing. The rear of the crank has to be drilled or you can cut off the input shaft and use a conversion pilot bearing. You'd need a clutch and a flywheel too. It could come to over two grand in parts alone.
IMO, I wouldn't bother swapping a MT behind that 307. I'd LSx / T56 it. Sure, more buck$, but WAY bigger increase in fun. Short of that, just rebuild the 3-sp AT unless you want to swap rear gears to 3.90-ish, then I'd go 200-4R too.
