timing chain parts

I replaced timing chain in my cutlass 330 and there is a round metal piece that has a key slot in it believe it goes on after the bottom gear and before the timing cover. Dropped something on it and mangled it. anyone know what that part is called. thanks alot

I am pretty sure you are referring to the oil slinger.

If not too bad you can fix it...the balancer is engine color while pulleys are black.

Make sure you torque the balancer bolt properly, which will require blocking the flex plate gear. That bolt is the highest torque setting (160 ft lb if memory serves me) of all the bolts in the engine, and the whole car if I remember correctly. The engine will start turning long before you get even close to tight enough if you don't block the engine from turning. When I bought my 72 Supreme Convertible, I noticed receipts for a tiimg gear and gaskets. After a few weeks, the engine seemes to run rough, but it was the balancer that was wobbbling at low rpms. It looked like a low rider from southern Califirnia, the way the whole car bounced up and down at a traffic light. The bolt loosened up to the point that the balancer wiggled and wore a 1/2 inch wide keyway slot. The balancer was toast, but fortunately it didn't damage the snout of the crankshaft, which have been a much more serious and costly fix.
