Cool thinking of swapping out my 350 to 455

hay everybody thanks for checkin out my thread!

i have 2 69 cutlass's one a "s" 350 needs some tlc looks great it was overhauled 8-10 years ago and the 350 seems pretty tired but is dreesed up nice and starts on a dime, maroon in color black vinol top ill post pics when i fin out how, it has a bench seat and black cloth interior.

the other is a supreme in need of alot of work 1/4's fender patches but everything is there a running (bareley) 350 buckets and console

my delema is i bought the fixer first then found this sweet lookin cutlass for an awsome price so now i got the fixer ripped up and i did orignally want to restore a car to learn first hand.

sooo i want to fix up the supreme steal the bench seat and door pannels and most of the interior wich is black cloth and drop in the 350 wich runs good and looks nice the interior color is ugly green right now with white exterior origanally gold in color i think i want to paint it yellow with black stripes after i steal the double flared hood from the "S"

so i have a nice yellow cutlass 350, now for the outher car i intend to keep for years to come ill put the buckets and console and new interior with some custom work (want to try some fibreglassing wich ill probly experimet with the fixer upper before i do so on the "S" any new parts i have to buy will go on the ''s" and swap that out onto the supreme

i found a 75 delta 88 with a 455 and turbo 400 tranny i know its not as good as a 72 or prior block but is it still worth it i can pick up the whole car for under 500 bucks its running and the engine sounds solid 140,000 origanal miles the car is rusted out so ill problly scrap it

so my question is is this a good idea the 455 ill probly mildly do it at first but future i want 480 hp ++ will this block hold under the presure.
what hp does a 75 delta 88 455 have?

hay i only want help with the car problems not my grammer, its bad i know if i want help with that ill go back to school

thanks jmac

The engine will essentially bolt in, beyond that I'm still learning myself. I know people have gotten numbers that you are talking about, but understand it takes quite a bit of work to get it.

Cool

I had a 69 Cutlass S that I swapped out the 350 for a 455 and about the only difficulty was the A/C box, it "was" in the way, so I "adjusted" it in just a bit.

The big block was factory offered in the 69 A-body and no "adjustment" was required, so I don't know why you found it necessary. Yes, the A-body cars used notched valve covers, but the notch is only to make it easier to remove the valve cover with the engine in the car. It is not necessary for clearance. The normal valve covers clear just fine.

By the way, it's "voila", not "wala"...

You're going no need a bit of machine work to get that tired old grocery getter motor to 480 horse safely.

Simple, when we set the motor on the mounts, the A/C box said CRACK. didn't look back though, it was the best swap we made, I should have picked up a set of A-body valve covers with the notches...

"You may require some fabrication for your throttle linkage, depending on your choice of carb. Also, you may have clearance problems with the PB booster. Get the A body valve covers which have the "notch" for clearance. This may also be a problem with the A/C unit, if your car is so equipped." ....442.com

thanks

Having personally installed several BBOs in A-body cars with PB and A/C using non-notched valve covers, I guarantee that the valve covers are not needed.

It will bolt on physically, but the tailshaft length is probably 9'' on that trans. Cutlasses usually had short ones. You will have to measure. To make it fit you would have to move your crossmember toward the rear of the frame. Also keep in mind, that if you do go with the 400, use the driveshaft from the matching trans.

Actually, a long tailshaft TH400 will require a custom driveshaft if you want to use it in an A-body. Also keep in mind that relocating the crossmember in these cars also requires that you change the front and middle e-brake cables since they hang off the crossmember.
