Non-flush front windows?
Non-flush front windows?
I was browsing around craigslist and saw this 68 Cutlass. Maybe I just haven't been paying attention, but what is with the front windows not being "one piece"? Is that option there to block wind or something?

It's funny when this comes up, I forget that many of the youngsters have never seen "wing windows". I always liked them for cross ventilation to clear the fog on the windows before AC became standard. plus great for fresh air on cool days. I still wish cars had them.

Vent windows are cool, my mom had '68 caddy with powerful vent windows.

My brother had an '85 Toyota pick-up with them.
On a hot day with them cranked all the way open they direct the air right between your legs, great when you're wearing shorts, and remember that women wore skirts back then.
They keep the air from buffeting with the side window open like a spoiler too, they kept the glass aligned, 1001 uses.
With the growing popularity of AC and the big time introduction of flow through type ventilation systems in the late 60's I guess they figured cars didn't need them anymore, and it was cheaper. You couldn't have the sport mirrors because of the vent window swing clearance on some cars and later integral mirrors wouldn't work with vent windows, cleaner lines for styling, and again...it was cheaper.
The big 90's GM wagons had the coolest ones on the rear of the rear side glass.
I want one just for those vent windows.

My daughter is 25, at that age the biggest problem is that you think you know everything and don't realize how ignorantly stupid you really are, college graduates are the worse.
What are you doing wasting your time on here??, on your birthday especially, when I was your age...
BTW, Happy Birthday!!

Here's a little trivia for you...
The vent (cozy) wing window for "draftless" driving was introduced by Oldsmobile in 1934.

My '92 'Yota 4x4 p/u had them. Last year for vents (& last year built in Japan, IIRC). In '93 they went to the full 1 piece window.
My '68 has them. They're an integral part of its eco-friendly non ozone harming 2/60 A/C system ...
proberly back in the day they had to have straight window so it would stay in the window track.so they filled in the front portion with glass for visabilty and some one decided to put a hinge and latch on it.as jay said that genuis worked at olds.
1970 Vent windows
My first car was a 1970 cutlass with a 2b 350 bucket seats with floor shifter and hardtop with vent windows. been a long time since I had that car it was beat up but to the best of my knowledge all original. I have not been able to find pictures or any documentation that shows this car with vent windows in 1970
Post coupes and four-door sedans had vent windows thru 1972. I remember thinking how cool "Flow-Thru Ventilation" and "Astro Ventilation" sounded in 1967-68. Then I realised you couldn't set a vent window to direct air where you wanted it, and those high level vents just didn't cut it on anything more than a 65 degree day. The windows had to go down to get any airflow in the car.
The 64 Starfires with vent windows and kick-panel vents keep you comfortable on hot days. I like them on my F150 pickup too. Wish the others had them.

This is an year and a half old thread...
Speaking of post coupes, I was surprised that the 69-72 post coupes without A/C used dash pads without the vent cutouts in them. Didn't know this until I bought a 72 post coupe.

[ and maybe others] The "vent window was popular with smokers back then to flick their ashes out of.
