My car... another newbie.
My car... another newbie.
Back in 1984 I bought my 1972 Cutlass S with a 350/4bbl 4speed dual exhaust and 3:42 posi. It had just been repainted black with black interior. Buckets with no console. Origional color was Baroque Gold. I got the origional window sticker, hand written receipt from Ladendorf Oldsmobile in Illinois, Cancelled origional check for purchase, protectoplate, manuals, and receipts for everything done since day one in that plastic folder.
I had to reassemble the car before I could even drive it. No problem tho. I drove it everywhere. Phoenix to Minneapolis many times. Never gave me any trouble. In 1988 My son was born so we moved back to Minn. and I parked it. I would occasionally clean the carb and fire it up but never drove it very much. In 97 I brought it home and started to tear it down. I peeled the vinyl roof back and found I could poke my finger through the roofskin.
Not good. I brought it to my buddies shop and pulled the interior (By the way, I was never stupid and cut up anything. My trim panels etc... are mint) and glass and made a plan. I ended up going to a boneyard and had a complete roof cut with much extra material. I carefully flipped the roof and trimmed my way down till I had just a clean factory roof skin. I replaced mine at the factory seams and patched my fender bottoms. My buddy was supposed to finish the rest of it. 2 years later I swung out to his shop to see it. There it was out in his woods uncovered and about 1 foot of oak leaves, pinecones, mud, etc... and a family of cats in the trunk.

I ended up bringing it home to my garage to finish it up. Slowly I made progress and last September I took a month off to get it ready to paint. As it sits now in primer blocked out with 240 grit. Gonna gover it with 320 and paint it black single stage. Wetsand and clear.
My new motor is a 455 with Edelbrock heads and Intake, 750 Demon carb. Comp Cams custom ground cam (My engine builder likes to do that according to how the heads flow) Over the years a few parts have walked away. One of which was my transmission/factory shifter setup. I have finally got everything replaced. That factory shifter was tough to find. I can't wait to start putting it back together.
One of my concerns is when I drive it again, I'm afraid it will be a letdown for the reason that it is not a time machine. It won't make me 18 again. Am I nutz???

I'm not going to make the car a 442 clone. I guess It is a 4speed /4bbl/dual exhaust. I want it to look like it did when I got it except for updated drivetrain and wheels. BTW... Yesterday going home I saw a black and gold 72 Cutlass raised up with 22s. I was embarassed for that poor car.
