So, I am almost around the car doing Sheetmetal repair/restoration. Left fender is almost done, just the left door to rework. So starting to focus on trunk and hood. I don’t see much drama in the trunk underside. Just scuff, epoxy prime and paint the new red pearl.

But the underside of the hood, I would like to have look nice. Factory treatment was a glue on fiberglass sound matt. Not very impressive and a grease and oil magnet that is not very friendly to being cleaned. And paint the metal outside edges black, or car body color? I’m not sure since I think this car has seen the body shop more than once. I could carefully remove all the old paint and crud and just paint it the new color, but the gaps between top metal and structural reinforcement would look bad.

I found a product called AcoustiHood. I think it an improvement over the factory solution. Factory fiberglass is about 40 bucks. Acoustihood is about $400 to the door. Example. https://www.opgi.com/gaskets-seals/w...o-CH30589.html. This one is for a Montecarlo, but they make them for just about any car. They will put a Cutlass emblem on it for a few more bucks.

The underhood insulation on my '68 was held by several square plastic clips that fit in pre-drilled holes in the bracing on the underside of the hood. I replaced mine w/ a new one I think from Fusick (had to buy a few new square clips too). Pretty sure yours was the same (I think I can see one of these holes in your pic). I don't think they were glued on. If you are worried about oil-staining, why use an expensive aftermarket solution?

 

Johnny, it is tempting to just put back a replacement fiberglass blanket. Quick and relatively easy. But they always seem to be dust and oil catchers, and rodents like em too. The plastic liner I referenced I think would be more wipeable, if that is even a word?

 

I used some 1/2” thick (maybe 3/8”s) adhesive backed closed cell foam and cut it to fit in the voids. I think the product may have been called FatMat. I’ve been meaning to redo it for years since it looks great, but I didn’t do a real great job cutting nice round corners, but it’s under the hood so it’s one of things I’ll get around to one day.

The only thing I’d recommend against, unless you’re showing the car, is the factory fiberglass stuff. All mine eve did was catch dust, droop and look crappy.

Much better stuff available now. Just be sure to clean the underside of the hood so the adhesive sticks well.

I used the Quietride insulation with the logo that you are looking at from OPGI. I found it cheaper off of E-Bay. I hung mine with the hood on the car, but it would have probably been better if I had remove the hood from the car.
