Fuel Tank vent lines

Anyone have any GOOD pictures on how their routed and where they're placed ???? I see the sets for sale in the OPG catalog, and my CD-rom service manual doesn't show them at all, just a surge tank of which I've never seen.

On my 70 the vent lines have stubs of fuel line on them and that's it. Currently I'm getting ready to plumb a high volume fuel system with 1/2 inch fuel line and I want to be sure I'm vented properly so I don't have problems. I'm also going to go with a vented cap.

My plans are, an MC Robb 1/2 inch sending unit, Aeromotive pre-filter to Aeromotive pump, 1/2 inch hard line for most of the distance using -8 braided as little as needed. An Aeromotive 40 micron filter before the carb, a Jegs fuel log at the Demon carb, followed by the by-pass regulator, then 1/2 inch line for the return.

On mine, a 72, it has 3 vent tubes, and it shows everything in the factory service manual. They can be picked up on ebay.
However, I am trying to eliminate them and just vent the tank. I guess that nobody on the forum has done this before, as I have asked the question.
I had a 69 chevelle that all I did was run a 3/8 fuel line and a vented cap. Easy.
Good luck

Fuel Tank Vent

Gearhead, there should be a metal clip on the underside of the trunk pan that a plastic piece fits into. Both hoses attach to this plastic piece and the other end had a fiber material stuffed in it. Attached are photos of the plastic piece with hoses still attached to a gas tank I removed. I think the clip was just a piece of strap steel welded on and folded over this piece to hold it in place. Kind of like the steel straps under the carpet that hold the wiring harness in place that runs from the dash into the trunk. I'm not sure, but think 1969 used this same method, 1971 was different. Let me know if this is clear as mud!

That looks like the picture in the book. Thanks you.
Does anyone know if this part is available as a resto part ???
I guess I could fabricate something if I had to.

I can tell you from experiance that you will need that part. I tried to just run two vent lines up to the top of the tank and after a fill up it would leak. That part acts like a vent and a return if one of the vents burps. JKaz

Sorry to add to an old post but I have a question that is similar to this. I think I need this part for our car, but ours is a 68 (not a 69 or 70) and the two vent holes come out of the front; by the right rear coil spring (not the rear by the filler neck). However, the two vent holes appear to be the same sizes as the ones on the plastic part shown in the photos. Does anyone know if 68 used this same part, only put it in the front instead of the back of the tank?

Mine is located at the right front corner of the tank.
When you get your vent tank, you'll want to put a small amount of foam in the top opening so dirt stays out of it.
I ended up getting mine from an acquantance who hoards parts.

Hi gearhead,

THanks for the reply. I did not want to assume this was the part I needed without asking someone else first; especially since it's like 30 bucks for this little piece of plastic. Ahh, the joy of restoration.

I know this is an old thread, but does anyone have a fuel tank vent they want to sell like the plastic one pictured in the photos. I had to replace my large hose yesterday, and it made no sense to me that there would be two hoses pointing up with no filter to keep dirt out of the tank. Now I see that there is a part missing on my car and it needs a foam filter in it.
Thanks in Advance
