I posted in the wheels/tires section a few days ago but there doesn't seem to be much traffic in that section... (mods can close or move or combine it please?)

Anyway, question is in the title... I know it can be done but I know nothing about backspacing

Wheels in question are Cragar SS's (15" rim) Tires will be white-letter either 60 or 70 profile (i.e. I'm not looking to barely squeeze some huge drag radials in there, I just need to make sure the new set doesn't rub on the inside or outside height should not be an issue

Oh yeah--car is a '70 Cutlass S

 

I think the width of the tire you plan to us is needed. I have some 10" wide rims that were fabricated with zero offset. 275/50/15's fit well on a 1971 Cutlass Supreme rear. I believe that was pretty close to a 10" footprint on those tires. If your running narrower tires than that I'd go with a smaller rim as the edge of the wheel would be sticking out further than the tread. I've run 255 width tires on 7" rims, I thought they looked good. My 2 cents worth! John

 

There is another thread with exact tire sizes and rim offsets. I can tell you I have cragars like that and 295/50/15 will fit but will rub. 275/60/15 will fit. And I forget the largest size you can fit in there. The 275/60/15 still has room on both sides. Try a search.

 

you will need 5.5" backspace for the 15x10" rim to fit. FWIW-I have used this combo with 295/50/15, 325/50/15 and 28x13.5 M/T's and they all fit fine on the 70-72 Body at least.

The backspacing on the 15x10 Cragars I'm looking at listed on jegs right now skip right from 4.25" backspacing to 6"

Probably 275/60/15 will be the rubber

Those look like 15 x 8 with L60's in that pic.

 

The shadow in the pic hides more of the wheel... they're pretty damn wide... I've seen the car a couple times and always thought they were 10 wide

That said, you could very well be right, my knowledge base in rims/tires is low

 

The reason I think that is how sucked in the sidewalls are.

 

I gotcha... now that you say it, my untrained eye sees it--you are probably right then...

That may solve this issue since I can't seem to find the 10" wide Cragars with better than 4.25" backspacing anyway (my earlier post about 6" backspacing was only for a different bolt pattern)

But 4.25" on a 15x8" rim would fit just fine, (depending on tire size) correct?

If you had to make an educated guess, do you suppose that car's running 295/60's as opposed to 275/60 to get that wide-tire look?

 

Ihave never seen a 295-60 except maybe in a drag radial. If you want that exact look and don't mind a bias ply tire look at th M/T L60-15
A 275-60-15 radial will be close to too.

I know this is a old thread but incase anyone wanted to know I talked to Stockton wheels today about having my 14x7 bolt on centers made into 15x10 with 5.5 back spacing this price of 290 a wheel is for drum brakes its more if your going big disc on rear ..... I'm just doin my rears for now . I had two extra wheels. If they turn out nice ill do the front 15x7 or maybe 8 next year...
Anyone have any input on their work ? Have you had yours done?
The only thing Im not sure about is if anyone makes a nice deep beauty ring for the wide rims or will I have to run them naked? I don't think they will look too bad just color matched

 

A few years ago I searched for deeper trim rings and found some on the net that I think were 3" deep, but I don't know anything about the fit or quality.

 

If you are talking about Stockton Wheels here in California, then I can say that the work they did for me was great. I had them make me some bare metal 15x7 smoothies for the 68 so I could get them powered coated.

You are correct that you will need 15 and up if you are going to disc brakes.

 

Yea I had a feeling a set of trim rings for them will be really hard to find . Might just have to go without.
