93 Cutlass Door Handle

Hey Everybody,

I have a 93 Cultass Supreme SL with a broken LF door handle mechanism. When it gets cold out, my door kind of freezes shut and I give it a tug and the handle or mechanism breaks. I'm not real sure what happens because I would always send it to the local mechanics and they'd fix it. They finally replaced it with a black one on my blue car and they said it isn't that strong so be careful. Well it broke again this winter and I wanted to fix it myself. I bought just the handle and went to work on it at school only to find out the door handle still moves the rod inside. The problem is I can not see the door mechanism good enough to see whats wrong because the door frame is basically solid. Is there any common problems that happen to this vehicle and how can I fix it or do I have to man up and bring it in? Can anyone give me pointers on it? Thanks.

You can reach in and feel where the 2 rods connect. If it is a safe spot to drill and cut on the inside, I'd do that, fix it, and then fold the metal back into place with a hammer and dolly, or whatever is around that will work for you.

Is your problem with the latch?, or the rod junctions?

Most likely your rod is too long to fully release the latch off of the post. A little bend with your hand will shorten it.
