87 Cutlass Ciera problem

It started out every once in a while, its now getting more frequent.

When coming to a stop, especialy leaving the interstate, the transmission does not release, it's like the converter isn't releasing, the car bucks and stalls. If I start it and rev it in neutral for a minute it releases and lets me put it in drive and go. If I DO NOT rev it in neutral it stays locked and stalls the car out as soon as I put it into gear, it'll do that a few times untill it releases.
Any ideas?

Torque convertor clutch solenoid (TCC). Unplug it, and you'll be fine. It's the square plug that goes into the trans. my 86 Ciera and 84 Omega had the same problem.

I was told it's your overdrive in a three speed auto. It also helps fuel economy, but the repair shop said I'd only loose 1 mile per gallon!? So I decided not to replace it for $180 , yet.
