72 Cutlass owner in Oklahoma

Hello,
Joined the site and wanted to say hello. My car is an ongoing project that I bought a couple of months before my oldest son was born (2.5yrs ago). It was a 350 2brl car but now has a 455 with a turbo 350 and soon to be installed 3.73 10 bolt. It's a pretty straight car with rust issues in the 1/4's and back glass. My daughter named it "Silver". It'll probably be her first car in 10 yrs!

mine was originally sequoia green paint with green vinyl top and green interior...triple green! It'll eventually be silver with black interior and maybe poverty caps on 15" steelies.
Drove it the past couple of days. My two oldest kids have a blast in it going around the block even with 3" exhaust dumped at the rear axle!

Thanks for the kind words.

Before shot of engine compartment. I had it running but the trans crapped out.

So...455 swap with turbo 350. Love the BBO

Gotta get it timed right. Still is too advanced and running warm. Been chasing issues since I got it but it's fun and puts a smile on my face when I drive it.

Welcome to CO. You will need to tell you daughter about the Lone Ranger and how he would say "Hiyo Silver" as he urged his faithful horse to rescue the damsel in distress. She would get a kick out of that. Nice plans for the car, poverty caps on steelies are cool.

Hope to get some work done before leaving for vacation. I'm going to check if my balancer has spun since my timing mark is not lining up with the tab.
I'm also going to order some front suspension pieces and maybe start rebuilding the rear control arms.
My warn out suspension makes it a white knuckle ride over 45mph.

Where you from rk? I just joined the site this evening. I am in OKC. That first pic of the gold 350 looked you may have had a motor mount issue. The engine looks like it was lifted on the left side. Must be all the Olds Power and Torque !!! I do not have an Olds as of yet. But I did get interested in the motors and likely going to have a 80's model GMC pu with an Olds 425 and Switch Pitch T400 I hope.

Oh, and BTW, you may notice some are suggesting a Turbo 400 with the 455. I am not 100% in agreeance with that, but I do know why they make the suggestion and they do make a very valid point. I can say I would stick w the T350 because I can rebuild one in about a couple hours. So I can break them whenever I want and its not a big set back as plentiful as the T350's are. It is true the 350 has a very slight better slight first gear, about 25 lbs lighter, and robs about 20 less horsepower. However, they are not near as strong as the T400. If you are driving that 455 hard and exposing the T350 to all the torque, rest assured, there WILL BE a time that you break the T350. Notice I said BREAK it, not wear it out. Likely to be either the intermediate sprag or the input shaft. So drive it until it breaks, then plan on finding you a T400 and if left stock, I'd say your chance of breaking the 400 is slim to none. I just rebuilt a 400 for my 86 3/4 ton w 454 and I was able to get a hold of a 69 Chevelle trans which has the good dog bone wedge sprag in it. I have never seen a 400 come apart before, but this one I rebuilt did. Someday I will post some pics of it. The most burned trans I had ever rebuilt before, so yes, they can come apart. This one had 173,000 miles on it, fully loaded and towing a dual axle U haul trailer up hill when it took a dive. That is how I scored the truck. They did not feel it was worth $1200 for a new trans, so I bought the whole truck with the awesome running 454 with approx 40,000 since rebuild for $100. Yes, only 2 zeros, not 3.

Hotrodpc give me a shout at hurstclone@yahoo.com. I had the 350 as a core and a friend of a friend built it. It will last until I drive it REAL hard. The same buddy has a long tail shaft 400 that he's storing for me. That's plan B for the next trans. I have tons of more work to do before I drive it hard enough to break anything!

Smile Sooners Rock!!(Cowboys too)

Hey fellas, I'm from OKC too! I'm new to the resto club and learning as I go. Not sure what I want to do to the engine itself(it's a 350R 2bll, stock) other than a new intake and 4bll, but when I saw your engine pics rktolds, I noticed that like me you'd removed your A/C. How did you get rid of the big part that sticks out of the firewall and smooth it out?

350ROCKETOLDS-1.jpg

That would create a lot of room to work for a guy with large hands.

It's a fiberglass cover made by American Graffitti. They sell for about $130 or so.
Hey we should have a get together. I have a buddy in Yukon with a ton of Olds. Maybe we could have a cruise in somewhere.

I'd image that part is just as good as a stock part for a non AC car isn't it? Usually where the heater core would go on a NON AC vehicle. I had a Pantywack I did the same thing to at 1 time. Just took all that out and put in the NON AC part from the junk yard in its place. Cost about $15 if I remember right. It was pretty shiney new though. Oh, and yep rk, you got the right trans sitting an waiting then. You'll be fine. Just expect some driveline work if you put the long tail in. Probably would have to a little work anyway with the 400, but I was thinking you might be able to find a factory made driveshaft when you put the 400 in it.

ANd I just noticed Orange442 in Bartsville. I guess if there is ever a site meet, we know where it'll end up being. OKC is pretty central anyway.

Yep, in OKC metro anyway. I can get from Moore, to Baptist Hospital on NW Expressway in about 20 minutes as long as its not rush hour, then it takes 30 minutes. Its all interstate.

Hi , I just got my ac delete cover yesterday. Did you use your old ac blower motor or did you need a non ac unit ? Or are they the same. Thanks

Yes, he lives about a mile from me. All the Olds guys around here know him, as he always seems to have a part they need. He is also the OCA advisor/ expert for '70 442s.
