64 F-85 hole in firewall

Guys I thought I knew these early A bodies well but apparently that's not the case. There is a rectangular hole in the firewall between the fuse panel and the parking brake and I cannot figure out what was there in the first place, have any ideas??

Stan, the non-A/C cars had a round hole in this location, while A/C cars were rectangular. As stated in my post on the 65 442 forum, regarding this same topic. This hole is intended for accessory wires. For example, the back-up light wire for the 3spd/4spd tranny passed through this hole before be routed to the tranny side cover back-up switch. Other wires: brown wire from tachometer to the coil, power top switch, power glass switch for the wagon.
