Hi,
I found out that one of my brake lights wasn't working on my 64 Cutlass, I brought it to a guy who
checked it out and said I need a new turn signal switch. Apparently the brake lights run through there.
I am looking for a switch. Not positive which one to get. I have one here (see link) that says it is for a '64 Cutlass
but it also says you have to check the switch to see whether it is all plastic or has a die cast metal base.
I'm not sure which mine has and can't pull off the steering wheel to look right now. The one in this ad looks like mine
from what I remember. It is also the most expensive one available which means it is probably the one I need. Anyone know for sure? Here is the ad. Thanks.

What's that light bulb for?
Personally, I'd take your wheel apart and check it out. Could just be a sloppy connection or something fixable.

And if going new- I'd check Fusicks.

Thanks for the info, Yes I guess I will pull the steering wheel today.
The lightbulb is for the shifting postiion indicator for the column shifter.
In my car that does not light up when I turn the lights on, So I'm guessing it is for that.

 

I called Fusick, they said that they don't have a switch for a '64. The two links you sent were for 65 & 66 and I thought the 64 would be the same. But this guy claims they are not and there is a different one for a 64 that he didn't have and could not give me a part number for. I've had this issue before as 64 is a one off year car.

 

OK I took the wheel off and saw the switch (and took pictures) it appears to be all plastic, If anyone can tell which one I need by the pics please let me know. I am hot seeing one that looks exactly like mine.

 

There were two versions, a Guide version and a Boyne version. Below is from the Jan 1972 Parts Book. Both designs were superseded by P/N 382048 service replacement switch. Pay attention to Note 4, which tells you that if you do have the Guide type switch the housing needs to be removed from the steering column to use this P/N service replacement. Search for 382048 in Google, you'll find some for sale.

Found one on Ebay using 382048 for $160, the most expensive one yet. But I know it is original
Everyone else seems to be using a different numbering system. I am waiting to hear back from a guy who has a bunch of these.
Otherwise I will buy the one available.

Although this thread is approaching its 4th birthday, I thought it better to chime in, rather than start anew.

My '64 needed a new turn-signal swiitch, top plastic on the old one had cracked at the signal lever mount. OPG had the "correct" one for $169.99, with a metal base and a light for a column-shift gear indicator (M&H - Switch, Turn Signal, 1964 A-Body w/o Tilt @ OPGI.com). Since I didn't need the gear indicator light, I went with this $63.99 offering, and it worked like a champ (Switch, Turn Signal, 1964-66 GM Cars, "Guide", w/o Tilt @ OPGI.com). I actually bought from Summit Racing, they price-matched OPG.
