1972 Cutlass: Sport Steering Wheel (option?)

My 1972 Cutlass S came originally with the Deluxe Steering wheel. I've since installed the 4 spoke Sport Steering Wheel, but I had a question:

Does anyone know if this was a factory option or a dealer installed accessory for this car, and it would therefore be ok to say it's correct for the Cutlass S that year? I looked at sales brochure for 1972 and it's not mentioning the Sport Steering Wheel anywhere but for the 442. And it's also odd that the 72 Sales Brochure shows a dashboard photo on page 36-37 for the 442 with the Sport Steering Wheel and no Rallye Pac, but rather the large needle fuel gauge and the optional clock on either side of the speedometer.

The reason I'm asking is I've entered this car in time for the Hershey show to be judged and I wanted to be correct if I'm asked about the steering wheel being right or not.

Thanks for any help anyone could provide.

The N34 sport steering wheel is shown on the factory option list for all Cutlass models in 1972. Note that the mounting hub is the same color as the steering column, but all horn buttons are black in 1972.

The sport steering wheel is mutually exclusive from the Rallye Pack - there was no package that automatically gave you both together, so the sales brochure combination was not unusual.

Exactly what Terry said. I also added the sport wheel to my car - it's an easy install. Just make sure you have the right wheel. There were two sport wheels and a lot of folks get mixed up with that. The proper wheel is 15.5" whereas the other (Starfire wheel) is 14.5". Both wheels are distinctly different in the stitching and molding patterns, especially around the spokes.

N-34

Aye, thanks to you both. N-34 indeed does the trick, so it surely was a factory option then. I did buy the right one, a nice used one as opposed to NOS or re-pop so it would match up well with the original interior.

Glad I will be in good shape with the judges this October in Hershey, a relief.

And one additional bit of info, since a used wheel typically won't come with the horn contact kit, you can buy them from just about any Camaro repro parts vendor, as they were used on Chevy and Buick sport wheels as well. Note that the spring goes in the hole first, then the eyelet (big end down), then the plastic retainer.

Thx Joe, mine's already installed, all functional. Glad I don't have to revert back to putting the Deluxe wheel back on. Felt like I was steering the car with a pencil.
