1969 W31 Opinions

Hey all,

Got in touch with a guy today selling a 69 cutlass W31 which appears to be in decent shape. He said the motor has been swapped to a standard 350 but still has the forced air intact. What do you guys think? Kind of hard to tell from the small pics and honestly I don't have enough experience to know what to look for.

Look for J code tranny since it is an automatic.
The code will be there JO

If that is not there then I would be leery

also check posi should be one of two factory rear ratios 342 or 391. There could be 433 but most cases other two

ask him there was a re paint hood should panels painted in this black or white due to interior color black

OP said engine swapped to regular 350.

JMO but I wouldn't pay too much more than a regular Cutlass in the same condition would go for with the original engine gone.

I disagree particularly if proof is there via paper work and or all pieces w exception of original motor just under a 1000 were made .
They are very unique

So honestly i'm not getting my hopes up but if it's in nice condition with solid frame floors and trunk with minimal body rust with a running 350 i'd pay 4k.

That's a good deal if the tranny, rear, balancer and ect becomes a steal

It was possible to delete the stripes, and there also was red and blue available for silver.

Ok just got back from looking. Car has its normal rust in the fenders and quarters. Doors are pretty nice. Trunk and hood are good. Frame us good floors are so so. It is a lansing car with manual brakes. Non original 350. The forced air components are mostly missing. One duct under the drivers side bumper. Double snorkel air cleaner is there but doesnt fit the carb that is there. Both the plastic inner fenders are in good shape with the cutouts.

go buy it or tell us where it is.

Are you kidding me?...A 1969 W-31 in paint code 69 Platinum Poly with black interior & vinyl top & you have not bought it yet? If you do not buy this you will hate yourself for a long time.

I had the car at my shop( actualy had the car for about 3 years) I sold it to the guy who has it now about 6 years ago it is not worth doing only thing left from the original w package is the air cleaner and the rearend and the cover has been off for more than 7 years.Original engine and trans are long gone. The passender side wheel well has been cut to change the Blower motor. The one scoop that is there is an early reproduction. The body isnt worth trying to fix needs floors rear wheelhouses, quarters, and fenders doors need rust repair and honestly need replaced.Seats are ok. It is a real W31 that was owned and purchased new by a friend but there is NO documentation. trunk pan has been cut open by someone to access shocks. you would be so deep in this car if you tried to restore it you would be so deep in it you would never see the light of day.

Its a crusty rusty Illinois car, with none of the drivetrain except the rearend and that would need completely gone thru and is also crusty. Those pics in the first post are from about 6 years ago at the place where I got the car.

Thanks Greg for the info. The car did look like it had its issues and that's why I walked. You are dead on about the rearend cover being off and the holes blownout in the trunkpan for the shocks. The odd thing is there was fresh diff fluid on the ground under the rear end and he said someone took it off just today to check for posi. That means this guy crawled under the car and poured fluid on the ground to make it look like it was freshly opened?

As far as Im concerned its a parts car. If your buying it to part out you couldnt pay anymore than 3000.00 for it,and you would need to get him to put the sport wheel back. For you to buy it it will cost 800.00 to 1000.00 to ship it to you. Not worth the effort and money.

That thing didnt drip a drop in all the time we had it which was close to three years. When your only selling point is the 12 bolt rear and that isnt in the best condition, some people will try anything to con you. That is sad.
