1964 Cutlass 442 rear end question.

Hey guys,

I'm trying to get my olds on the road after setting about 40 years, and I want to get a lower rear end in it. It has a four speed with a ten bolt rear and the ring/pinion seems to be 2.73 I took it to a guy to put 3.53 or similar (3.73) in it but he is telling me I have to replace all of the internal stuff. I say BS... My research indicates that the stock 3.53 should fit to all of the stuff in the housing now. I don't think I'm getting the correct story.

Could you all enlighten me???? I could use some about now.

Thanks Ya!

I know when I put the 3:90 gear in my 65 you had to have at least a 3:30 carrier for it to work. I'm pretty certain you need a new carrier.

I think Jag is correct
You may be able to go 3.08 or 3.23 max with the existing carrier
