I doubt anyone could care less about the so-called new Beatles song than I do. In fact, I think the whole thing is rather ghoulish. Yes, I know, "new" songs by dead artists have been released before by finding them on tapes left behind in the studio and reworking them to a full-fledged song. They did this with several songs by Prince after he died. They did it with some Beatles tapes early on.

But it seems different with this one. John Lennon has been dead now for over 40 years. George Harrison for over 20. The body of work these men and the other Beatles left behind will probably never be equaled. To sully it just for the purposes of having a "new" Beatles song to play with this very mediocre song (it really is pretty bad, in my opinion) that was produced by using all kinds of electronic machinations involving AI to extract Lennon's voice from what I understand was a rather muddy original recording is wrong. They even used AI to recreate his voice for other parts of the song. Lennon didn't follow up on this song when he was alive, and perhaps there was a reason for that. Not everything he committed to paper or tape was #1 hit material, and I'm sure he realized that as much as anyone. I wonder very much what he would think of this latest effort were he still alive.

Leave us with their great body of music we already have, leave us with our memories, and let the dead rest in peace.

 

I've more or less followed the history of Now and Then from a Jeff Lynne (ELO) perspective - a couple articles/readings and either one or two interviews (tape recorded sessions with Jeff). I've always been a fan of Jeff & ELO, especially during the times of The Traveling Wilburys; which, I believe is during the time I first read/heard about Now and Then and saw Jeff talking bout the one day session they attempted in making it work. Jeff was going to co-produce the song. George didn't particularly care for the recording he listened to and supposed Paul called the tape complete bullshit & rubbish as it contained some terrible 60Hz noise in the recording which (I don't believe) could be removed. So, they pretty much squashed the entire deal. I mean Jeff was going back on the road w/ ELO, recording with The Traveling Wilburys, collaborating with George, yadda, yadda, yadda. It was a rather tumultuous time attempting to put together a song which was never finished by John. I think they actually were talking about it prior to the early 1990s - sometime around the time Roy Orbison helped form The Traveling Wilburys, then Roy died, then George died. I'll have to say during that period of time, all of those guys were heavily into putting some really great new tours together and some really good songs - esp. The Traveling Wilburys.

I listened to the song yesterday and I didn't think it was all that bad.

 

Now compare that "not all that bad" experience to the first time you heard "A Day in the Life".

 

My two cents. Those are John Lennon's words and voice. George Harrison put down his guitar before he was passed. Ringo and Paul added their's. I don't hate it. Today's music is total trash. Musician's? Wait what?

Get used to it.

Never was a Beatles fan..

 

Well, there's not much danger of that changing with this latest release, then.

 

I'm a Beatles fan and there are quite few of their songs I don't like. I'll basically do what I have always done with them, just skip it.

 

There shall be as many different opinions as there are people. I think it is amazing what can be accomplished today that could not be done 25 or so years ago! I'm with Norm on this one!

 

I think the Beatles were always looking to push the limit with recording and technology. Even back in the 60’s they were ahead of their time with recording and laying down tracks. I think using this new technology fits right in with what they have always done. Is it the best Beatles song? Not by a long shot, however if we can enjoy another Beatles song why not…
