RIP: Dusty Hill

Dusty Hill, bassist for the iconic rock band ZZ Top, has died just days after he had taken a leave of absence due to a hip issue, the group said Wednesday.

Pour one out. He was still young at 72.

Moved to the Clubhouse forum, In Memoriam is specifically for Classic Oldsmobile Members. Another great musician lost, truth be told, we are all aging with them.

Somehow this just seems appropriate.

My wife got this message yesterday from one of her friends recounting meeting Dusty a few years ago in Tonawanda, NY:

I have a cool story about him. I was staying at a Hampton Inn in Tonawanda for work. I saw a dude with a long beard and said to my colleague (a little too loudly), "Does that guy think he's in ZZ Top or something?" We chuckled and sat down and proceeded to eat.

On his way out of the breakfast area he stopped by our table and said, "Hi I'm Dusty and I am the bassist for ZZ Top." and winked at me. We had a nice conversation and he told me they liked to stay at smaller places to get away from the crowds

Indeed a special sad day in Texas. When Pam and I were kids back in the 80's we went to their live concerts here in Big D...

This is one band I got to see. I was in collage in 86, my roommate worked in the ticket booth in sales. Slipped him some extra and he got me tickets 3rd row dead center. Was a fantastic concert. Will miss it.

Cadzilla is an Iconic Custom for sure. We have a customer in Texas who grew up with Billy Givens, went to school with him and they are still close. He invited our Head Fabricator, who runs the NicKey Gasser shop to a Concert in Texas and was surprised when they went back stage and hung out with Billy prior to the concert. There is a Big Screen documentary coming out about the band.

Peace to Dusty and all his family. You left a deep groove Brother. ZZ Top is a one of one band. Thank you Dusty.

As for them loving cars? They are on it. (Same for Jimmy and Stevie Ray Vaughn) The coupe got stolen more than once right? Cadzilla? Can't even touch that. Did Chip have a hand in that cars design? Sure looks like it.

I got to see them once in Wichita. It always amazed me that that much music could come from just 3 guys....

Crazy how there used to be musicians. People were actually a band. They played INSTRUMENTS... 🤯

I’m a smart ***, and have a black belt in sarcasm.

Whenever my kids or their friends are over and play their “music” I never miss an opportunity to comment on whatever happens to be coming from the stereo. I always give them a questioning look snd ask “what’s wrong with the stereo?” When they reply nothing is wrong, I always give them a look of shock and say “You mean it’s SUPPOSED to sound like that?!???”

I’ll say it again, today’s music sucks.
