I have zero interest in this conversation turning political. None, zip, nada, so keep the political comments to yourself.
I’m tired of this “I’m offended” society we live in today.
I’m kinda curious what historians 50 years from now will think of this nonsense? I wonder what the history books will label as the start of this way of thinking.
I just saw this on the paper. I don’t know when the male/female terms to identify the parts first began (other than anatomy books) but I’m guessing it goes a very long time ago.
I saw that in the weekend "Parade" and snickered to myself at its stupidity. Let's hope the one who posed the question is not involved in any electrical or mechanical trade. What surprised me was the usually logical Vos Savant's reply.
Stuff like that usually comes from people who are looking for a reason to be offended, or from people who want to be perceived as "woke" (whatever the hell that means) and are seeking approval or validation of their insignificant lives.
If you hadn't noticed, these insignificants always hop on the nearest bandwagon or, as a friend often said, they follow whoever's beating the drum the loudest.
I have subscribed to "The Sun" literary magazine for years. Used to be really good writing, but the last three years it has been co-opted by "the woke" who have turned it into a never-ending litany of grievance. Some of what's in it now would make a completely sane and well-adjusted individual contemplate suicide- that's how bad it's gotten. So, after 20 years, I won't renew the subscription. Can't stand the doom and gloom, and I daresay the lady who is aggrieved by male and female terminology may have written to "The Sun".
I'll add that I parted ways with "Smithsonian" magazine after 37 years for much the same reason. With the stuff in their collections, they could have printed thousands of issues and never have repeated themselves as to content. Around 2017 the magazine took a hard lurch into the left lane and became a propaganda outlet. I want to read about the marvelous things the Institution has, not propaganda. So, "Smithsonian" will survive without my subscription.

There used to be a societal respect for expertise. Now everyone has wikipedia and are an expert.
Ok, here is my "Theory on Relative Expertise."
Due to Dunning-Kreuger style ignorant presumption of skill, not only is one, when they don't know anything substantial, deluded about the knowledge they lack about a specific subject, they are deluded about their lack of knowledge in ALL subjects because they simply do not possess the frame of reference to understand the scope and depth of anything. This, coupled with an increase in "useless jobs" where one simply pushes paper or excel files around, has led to an increase in people that need no real skills, and thus cannot comprehend the existence of real skills, and the importance of the people, and their expertise, who have them.
It needs some refinement, but it used to be that whoever wrote that would be laughed out of town, and that article would be framed in every electrical shop in town, and good luck getting anyone to come fix your tripping breaker, honey.
I will never be able to look at any electrical plug or outlet the same anymore. Maybe a transgender type of electrical connection needs to be produced.

Popular culture is just that. It is a reflection of the attitudes of most of the people in the society. As well, methods of government reflect those attitudes.
None of this will change until underlying attitudes change. And all we can do is what you have done; call out lack of logic when you see it. Talk about it. Some may listen.
Judging from past trends, it will take two generations until people discover that what they wanted didn't work. (As you intimated--it will be over in 50 years.)

They will look at the movie "Idiocracy" as a documentary.

Thank you Matt. I've been saying exactly that for the past year. A local town just abolished the "Colonials" mascot. (Joe P- it was not Shrewsbury)
There is an interesting one going on in Texas. The cancel culture wants the University of Texas to drop The Eyes of Texas as the school song because they say it is racist. They don't claim the lyrics to be racist but the songs past is racist. I will guarantee you it is not going to change. UT has many significant donors and many have said if the song changes their donations will cease. We are talking millions. It is such a BS thing and folks are getting tired of it. I will not drink any Coke products since in their eyes I am too white. Their tying to teach employees to act less white is one of the biggest BS things I have seen a major corporation do. I better stop now since I have one foot up on the soapbox and if I get the other one up there I will probably be banned. By the way my oldest grandson is going to UT this fall and will be in the Longhorn Band and I look forward to him playing The Eyes of Texas. The Eyes of Texas are upon you,
All the livelong day.
The Eyes of Texas are upon you,
You cannot get away.
Do not think you can escape them
At night or early in the morn --
The Eyes of Texas are upon you
'Til Gabriel blows his horn.

When some uninformed starts yapping about something "being on the wrong side of history" my standard reply is that an event that occurred in the past cannot possibly be on either the right or wrong side of history, as it occurred and cannot be undone, no matter how much effort you put into attempting to rewrite or erase it. The correct terminology is the event is on the WRONG SIDE OF CURRENT POPULAR OPINION.
That generally elicits purple-faced rage and me being called every variety of SOB known to man. After that outburst I say "you have proven my point" and walk away.
Never understood the mindset that people from earlier times must be held accountable to modern standards and ethics. But, the world is full of self-absorbed idiots who make a fat living keeping grievances on high boil. I believe they're called "organizers" and "influencers".

🤣
Then you get into instantly obsoleting standards that have worked reliably for decades. Bad enough that North American electrical standards don't work with European standards don't work with Asian standards. Not saying one is any better than another, but one cannot use equipment designed to one standard with the others.
I just read an article this morning that the new Space Jam 2 movie is editing out Pepe Le Pew. They say that he popularizes the "Rape Culture".
Oh please.
Pepe was a parody of Charles Boyer's "Pepe Le Moko" character in the 1938 movie "Algiers". Doubtful the knuckleheads practicing cancel culture on "ze Skonk avec Peu" know that. Also very doubtful they're sophisticated enough to understand the humor, or even have a sense of humor. Being offended gets them farther in life.
Are they gonna redo the Walker Texas Ranger song too? "The Eyes of the Ranger"?
Pepe Le Pew is one of my few go to impressions: "Oh, mah sahweet cherie" <smooch, smooch, smooch>
I've been getting controversial books before they get banned.
BFG, there is a cable term called "gender bender." Me, being the PC person I am, may have called it a homosexual converter a couple times. In stage lighting, the gender bender fits in with the twofer (splitter with one male, two female plugs) and the threefer (same thing, but three female plugs.) You can sneak in the "dickfer" joke if you want to when asking for a bunch of things.
In other uses, a homo converter is used to backfeed a house through an outlet with a generator. Illegal unless done to code, but hurricane season tosses all boats....

Actually in a way they did. Have you seen the new "Walker" reboot on the CW? Walker is now a widower with 2 messed up kids that keeps screwing up and needs his new lady partner to bail him out all of the time.

I thought about watching this new series, but just seeing the commercials turned me off... Haven't wasted my time watching any of the new episodes...
Just heard that the Cleveland Indian's are soon to be renamed. WTH people? Goodbye KC Chiefs. Can't wait for horse supporters to try and take the Broncos name away. What a joke. 🤡

It is the new 'woke' world folks. Be careful! Ships, boats, and other water vessels are referred to as 'She', we can't forget as well, our beloved Oldsmobiles, many of us refer to them as 'her' or 'she', As a note, some of us may refer our Oldsmobiles as a 'he' for whatever reason, we have 2 as a she, and two as a he. Next on the lists can be songs such as '409', as "She's real fine my 409...." and 'Little Deuce Coupe', with "She's got a competition clutch..." I don't think the woke world is done yet. Here is a story that was told to me by a late uncle who was around in horse and buggy days. I asked him in some conversation why he always referred to his many cars I remember (beautiful 1960 Buick, 1963 Oldsmobile, 1966 Oldsmobile and so on) as "she runs well," or "She is acting up again". In East Europe, many folks had obviously horse and buggy to get around in, or use as delivery vehicles. The horses were usually mares, because of their more gentle disposition versus males, even gelded ones. The mares would sometimes not want to work, simply stood still, usually in a most inopportune spot, such as blocking an narrow intersection or a single-width bridge. The mares were smart, they wanted to go home when it rained, etc! They refused to work! This may be a very plausible reason why the tradition stuck, especially when the first motor vehicles were around, they would break often, so I guess folks would cuss them out using the female identification, and when they ran, "She is running smooth as silk!" Sorry for the long-winded comment here Rocket V-8 lovers, this can end up being a very long conversation, we can't erase history, whether something is right or wrong, we have history to learn from. We hope in the most unbiased way. Now that is perhaps another story....
I attended a training seminar quite a while back that was based on the simple fact : It is not possible for someone or some thing to offend you!
You must first allow yourself to be offended.
Apparently nobody believes that anymore.
Well hold on folks it’s getting worse !! Disney thinking of pulling Dumbo, The Aristocats and Peter Pan !! The woke crowd claiming their racist !! WTF when does this stop !!!!!

Unreal stuff. I remember when you had a disagreement you talked it out. Sometimes fought it out. Brought people together many times more than not. This world now? Nope sorry. We Are Butthurt... No really each and everyone of us. Ugh. Me too.

I would never consider watching this show. Chuck Norris would come make me into one of his facts.
I am amazed at how corporate America has caved into this BS. It is like it is a crime to be born white and in the South. Dixie Beer which has been around since 1907 and is brewed in New Orleans has changed it's name to be politically correct. Coca Cola has been training their employees to act less white. What the hell is that all about. Guess what? I will no longer buy any Coke products because I am too white. Okay, enough of my rant.
