So coming back from the NHRA races in Joliet. I'm running North up 355 in Illinois. A 2007 GTO (dual exhaust) runs up against me and signifies he wants to go. We're doing around 70 to 75 already so I drop it into 4th (5 speed Tremec) and nail it. It's a good go as we hit the wood at the same time. I walked away up to right around 120mph. Was in front enough where I couldn't see his lights in my side mirror. Backed off to 70 and flashed my brights as an acknowledgement. As I got off the highway at my exit I got a meek beep beep from a Toyota who watched the show from behind us. Very cool to know the old muscle can still take down the new stuff!

 

So, how's that thing ride at 120?

They did not make a 2007 GTO. All 2004-2006 GTO`s had dual exhaust but the 2004 both exited on the left side. Nice 68.

You know what? At 120, It felt like it was at 80. Not a shimmy or shiver. The complete Hothckis suspension I'm running probably had a lot to do with it. The Tremec 5 Speed I'm running has a .64 overdrive. I dropped it into 4th and wooded it. I expected some shaky stuff to begin as we raced. I looked down and we were doing 120. The car was as solid as a rock. Smooth as a baby's ***. When I thought about it I figure the car could go to 130 easy. At that speed though, things happen fast. I made my point. That was enough. He had exhaust and thought he could take down the "Old" Musclecar. Ha! I laughed my *** off.

Forged pistons, cast crank, Cast rods, 10.5 to 1 Comp, .525 cam, all MSD components, Ford (yes, Ford rockers) Edelbrock Heads out of the box, Air Gap, 780 Holley DP, Alumi Coated headers and 2 1/2 inch exhaust, 5 Speed Tremec, 3.73 12 Bolt. Full Hotchkis Suspension, KYB shocks, Hotchkis lowering springs ( 1 Inch front, 2 Inch back, level) All tubular suspension. The car drives wayyy better than new. Very fun.

It was a bit past 120. I was very surprised when I looked down. The road (355) is new and concrete to boot. Four lanes of superhighway. Never gone that fast in this car and I've owned it 12 years I think. 355 is a perfect road. I once saw a pack of CTS-Vs fooling around at high speed late one night.

 

Great story.. I've been on 355 headed up to my wife's sisters house in Huntley, and it was so desolate we had the highway to ourselves and seemed though we were traveling along around 60 mph it seemed much slower being that highway is so massive. Glad you didn't get stopped, couldn't imagine the cost of that ticket. Or I think that may be a one way ride with the officer at that speed.

The 355 extension is fun and we have used spotters before to enjoy that stretch in the weeee hours of the morning.

 

Tobin was my right hand man. I took him to all the car shows. No leash, and everybody knew him. Treats? Treats? Anybody got treats? He's been gone for a while now. Best dog I ever had. He loved to ride with me, even if it got a little rough sometimes.

 

Digging the Zappa reference

Per copper's comment I always see tire scrubs against the barriers on the 355 extension so it's a definitely race-worthy stretch. The wheelbase of the marks are typically short so I'm assuming it's the squirrely rice burners that are bouncing off. My neighbor has a 2012 Shelby Cobra and claims he has hit 140 MPH between the exits at 127th and 159th. It's downhill so I believe him.

 

I wondered if anyone would get that reference. That's exactly the stretch I was on except heading North instead of South. I get off at 127th St. Do you go to any local shows? I don't believe I've seen your car around? I used to live in New Lenox. Now in Lemont. I used to go to 159th and Harlem on Fridays but it's a bit far now. How about 159th and Bell on Saturdays?

I go to a few shows here and there. My car is nowhere near show quality so I don't hit many other as a spectator. It's been great convertible weather lately so my wife and I were cruising around this week and hit the Lemont show Wednesday by chance. Maybe you were there? We only stayed for 30 mins. We were also at 159th & Bell a few weeks ago, so that may be a good place to meet up for the future.

 

I was there. Car was parked under the bridge. I'll be at Bell on Saturday more than likely.

 

I put a full Hotchkis suspension, with the B-Spindle upgrade on my 64 Pro-Touring build, 9 inch Moser, QA1 adjustable shocks, Lee Engineering steering box etc. I'm hoping when I get the car in the street with everything tuned and adjusted I can give you X2 on the ride and drive!

 

When I put the lowering springs in, the rear sat up around an inch higher than the front. I wanted it level so I put in 2 inch drop springs in the back. I need to put in a quick ratio box now because the car actually handles and going around turns you have to really crank the steering wheel quickly. In due time. Just like everything else.
I had a douchey Dad (kids friend's dad) come in my garage. First thing he says? "You need new springs, you know that right?" LOL! Scram!

 

yes sir, I understand-time and $$$$. When I get the 64 car in the street and the suspension settles, I think I'm going to need to replace the Hotchkis stock A-body rear springs with 2 inch drop also. Sets to high in the rear for me.Then I will do some figuring and get some nice rear tires or drag radials to fill the wheel wellsl. Going to use my GM big car 15x7 steelies with the 64 F-85 dog dish hub caps that are on there now. I think there's a few companies out there that can cut out the centers and adjust the backspacing? Or maybe cheaper and less of a hassles to get someone like Wheel Vintages to make you a few.

 

I always thought those were expensive. Yes? I DO like the look though. It's funny that in the day, guys would order the steelies and dog dish because they were stopping by their speed shop to pick up their aftermarket wheels on the way home. Now it's a period correct style that looks great.

 

Didn't walk down that way for some reason. In the city tonite doing the grandpa thing so no Big R / 159th show for us. Probably next week. I'll give you a shout out if I'm heading that way.

I like the base-granny car look too-the "stealth look" That's what this base F-85 was being a "post car". Granny ordered this car with no seat belts, vinyl floor, no carpet, no rear arm rests. Just a heater and a AM radio is all this one had.

 

What motor is going into it? Trans? Rear? Splain, please.

 

z113775ss, I have a large thread tha'ts several pages long, taking years to take this car down and build it and its under "Major Builds and Projects". Right now its on page 2 titled "Update progress on 64 Post" But in a nut shell, car has a Moser 9inch rear, highly modified 200-4R trans, and stock 67 400E is under the hood.If I get to it I have the parts to build a 425-goal would be 450-475 horsepower. Everything done to the car will support this power and much more if I went to the dark side and put an LS motor in it.This has taken a lot longer to do 100% build than I have ever dreamed and a lot of that has to do with work of course but as the years roll by its gets harder for me to work on the car, even in the shop when its 100 plus degrees outside.

 

Had to laugh when I read this - I'M the gramps and we were in the city watching my granddaughter yesterday for my daughter.

I wish I was visiting my gramps!

 

Or that they were buying the least expensive car sans any options for basic transportation.
