Got up this morning the ground was white. But I had heard someone else had found 30 last sat. So I was determined to go . The snow was gone by the time I got there. The whole way hiking up the mt. I figured I was just going because it would bother me if I didn't go. Boy was I wrong. We found 81 some thimble size or smaller but still they were there. A few were a little old.

i had an uncle that was an amazing mushroom hunter...if there was 1 mushroom in an acre..he knew where it was and could find it..

 

Mushrooms are 3 weeks early this year. Stop at the dinner this morning for coffee and bs with some friends . As soon as I set down I was asked what's new . I said found 81 mushrooms yesterday. My friend said you did not ! You got pictures ? I'm not going to believe you unless I see pictures. I pulled out my phone and showed him . He pretty much left as soon as he saw them. That waitress came and said did he lleave? I said yeah. And she Said he only ate 1/2 his breakfast.

I managed a Rod and Gun Club for a lot of years. 93 acres. One of the old timers was a mushroom expert. I asked him one time how he learned how to mushroom. He told me that MY grandfather taught him. Sadly, my grandfather never taught me.

my buddy showed up with 2- 5 gal buckets about 3/4 full yesterday..wouldnt give a single one up either

 

They must be popp'n. My cousin just called, he is on his way over. Kinda wish I had some fresh crappie to share with him. He'll settle for some asparagus I've been trimming the last couple of days. Frost didn't hurt them at all.

 

Found 30 more yesterday. I don't know what I'd do with 2 5gal buckets 3/4 full? Ah.....yes I do.

whats a fiddlehead? ive never heard of it..it must be local dialect..and too lazy to google

 

I like mushrooms and all but what do you do with so many?
Is it morels that you harvest from the wild?
I don't think I would be confident enough eating a mushroom I picked with my family or friends in case someone got sick or started tripping.
I here that truffles can be fun looking for and valuable to some people?
You ever search for those?

 

A fiddlehead is a fern. You pick them in the spring before they are fully developed.

You guys are way ahead of us here in Michigan. We won't see morels for another 2-3 weeks and will usually find the white morels as late as the first week in June. At around the same time period we also pick wild leeks/ramps and wild asparagus. @ Scrappie, once you've seen a morel you won't mistake another mushroom for them.

 

Went again today.I found 5 two gray ones that were pretty fresh and 3 blacks that were kinda dryed up. I got almost all the way back to my truck when I noticed I didn't have my cell phone. So I started back up the mountain I got about half way back up when I decided to go borrow a phone to find it with . I went back down got a phone ,went back up found my phone pretty quick there was 2 places I was in the brush pretty good and I figured it would be there. I decided to go down a different way and found these.

Those are fiddleheads. You cook them like vegetables. There's even a fiddlehead statue in New Brunswick.
