This is a new one on me. Makes you wonder what kids are thinking in their efforts to get buzzed.


I'm around a bunch of young bucks who guzzle energy drinks like water. They stay jacked up bad enough on that.

and a waste of Mt Dew as well.

It's hard to believe how these young people can think of these things without realizing the possible ramifications...

 

 

hard to say that to the surviving family..

too much u-tube and face book...i like to blame things on modern society...but its really parent failure..big time..about 4 my granpa said..you drink the stuff you gonna die boy...and i took it serious..

 

Culling the herd

 

High school kids in my area are having these pill cocktail parties. basically they get bunch of pills, whatever they can get their hands on, throw them in a big bowl and eat them by handful while chugging on cheap vodka.
Man, I must be old when a good ol dime bag doesn't do the trick.

 

The racing fuel was methanol I don't know if anyone mentioned that. Dumb question but can that be drank in any amount safely?

Not as far as I know. Warnings on washer fluid jugs have always said methanol cannot be made non-poisonous.


Some RF blends include toluene which is also a poison.


Hard lesson learned here.

 

The article linked to above said "gasoline," but this article is better and clarifies that it was the methanol-type racing fuel.


Short answer: NO.

Longer answer: Like antifreeze, small quantities probably won't kill you, but if you drink enough to get drunk, it sure as hell will.

Methanol was also a common ingredient in "bathtub gin" during Prohibition, and was the reason people who drank it went blind.

I recall a story of a Canadian kid whose parents took a drive south of the border to stock up on vodka for a party, bought a large quantity, put it in washer fluid bottles and dyed it blue, to avoid the heavy Canadian alcohol taxes. The kid watched them do this, then a few weeks later snuck into the garage, found a bottle of actual washer fluid, thought it was the vodka, and drank it. He died, too, but at least he THOUGHT he was drinking real ethanol. These kids were just idiots.

Bottom line, though, in my opinion, is that these modern drinking laws are just stupid.
When I was a kid the drinking age was 18, and nobody really cared, so I could buy booze or drink in bars from when I was 13. We'd go buy a bottle of wine and play frisbee in the park, or something, but very seldom did anybody ever get raving drunk, and by the time we were in college, we knew how to hold our liquor.
These days, kids get shipped to the hospital for alcohol poisoning on their 21st birthdays left and right.

That's why I let my teenage kids try alcohol before they were of age. As long as they were home they could drink whatever they wanted. It didn't take long for the novelty to wear off. My daughter got sick on some wine coolers and I think my son had an episode with some weird micro brew beer. They are both adults now and very seldom drink alcohol.
I didn't want their first experience to be in a frat house or bar, where they could get arrested or worse.

Ha. Yeah, since my boy was about 10, we've offered him wine at every holiday meal, and every time he's sniffed it and refused it.

It's not so much fun if it's not a big deal.

He's a freshman in college right now, and as near as I can tell, he still doesn't drink (never says "Hey, can I have one?" if I'm having a beer - never even looks at it).

I did the same thing with my kid. I know he got **** faced once in college, but since then I don't think he drinks anything.

 

I wonder if there's a difference I mean in an intoxicating way or a servivability way between methanol and nitro-methane?

The article I read said the racing fuel could be bought at convenience stores. When we raced we bought it by the 55 gallon drum .never saw methanol at a convenience stores. But I could have over looked a small container of rc fuel wHicham I think is nitro-methane . They said it was called dew-shine. Which suggests that this is done alot. It always makes me mad when I hear about something like this because it looks like their informing us or wornning but their also telling kids and dumb-asses that hey here's a quick way to get high . Everybody else is doing it.
