What's BUGGING you now??

As in insects and those kind of bugs...

Here in Dallas TX, we have been flooded with crane flies for the past several weeks.
These things:

They are a big pest, but harmless. Their flight 'pattern' is worse than that of the typical moth.

Yesterday I got my first 2 mosquito bites of the year. These are forever pests around here.
Fireants are in full swing (they never go away - just muliply) and termites are now getting their wings. I killed a bunch inder a rock in the garden last week.

I am curious to see what bugs bug you in your area at different times of the year.
Those on the west coast I definitely want to hear about, as on the north half, I rarely experience any in the fall!

Ive heard that the crane flies eat misquitos, so I just leave 'em be. But, boy, their flying is extremely erratic; good call.

You'd think with the snow and the long freeze here in Texas we would have a mild critter season here in N Texas. Yet, with another spring I find the critters are even worse this year. I'll bet some of em I've seen don't even have names yet!! Oh, and forget trying to find chemicals to spray them with, the EPA has fixed that!!!

The Love Bugs are starting to show up here in FLA. Just make sure you wash them off your car or they will eat the finish right off.

Well, being in North Texas, you can look forward to June bugs and mole crickets pretty soon. Three years ago I had a infestation of Cicada ground wasps that were swarming my yard, they were so big I was suspect that they could have carried off my 65# dog like terradactals!!!! There were hundreds of them, and I started to get really concerned when the Terminex Commercial guy told me that my yard looked like something from the Old Testament!!!! I found that they burrowed down at night into the ground and a transmission funnel buried 5" deep into the hole with about a quart of the cheapest 87 octane did the trick. Of course while performing the task I could not resist singing AC/DC's "Have a drink on me" and laughing diabolically!!!! My neighbors still talk about it!! Good times

Well, the north Texas summer bugs are out. Mosquitos were eating me alive last night.
Also, right before I went inside, I was dive-bombed by a JUNE bug!
Those things are not supposed to be out until the middle of May!
Fire ant mounds are popping up faster than I can get rid of them. I am almost out of my stockpile of Diazinon...
I think this all means the ground heated up sooner than normal and from what I have heard, we are in for a hotter and dryer than normal summer...

I am sure the 'love-bugs' are in full swing over near Florida now.

Is it just us guys in the south who have so many problems with bugs?
Whenever I visited the NW and NE coasts, I never had an issue with them.
I would like to hear if you northerners have to deal with these pests, too...

I had the light on in my garage and the door open last night and I have never seen so many of these things. You have to hurry in the house or they will swam in. I hate these things. If they eat misquitoes, I should not have one misquitoe this year. Like that will happen.

Sorry no bugs here. And it's been beautifully sunny 65"F all week.Lot's song birds.
Crow are another story. Thousands of them every sun up and sun down, They don't cause problems or poop as they fly. Just noisy.

The Crane Flies themselves don't eat mosquitoes (they sip nectar), but their larva do eat mosquito larva.

It's just you guys in the south. We get mosquitos a bit when it's hot & damp but not bad. No fire-ants, no poisionous snakes. The box elder bugs are annoying twice a year but harmless. We do have to put up with 5 months of winter.

Here in Indianapolis, I just saw my first mosquito last week. It is nice going all winter with no bugs. We do get some lady bugs on occasion & moths & stuff, but nothing you really have to worry about like those fire ants or snakes. Those cicada killer wasps are scary looking though. I think they're big enough to be seen on radar.

Though I now reside in North Texas, I spent several years at the air base in Minot, ND..... those folks are ramping up for the spring thaw and subsequent mosquito swarms!!!! Nothing like washing/detailing your car for a weekend evening cruise down main street and having the front of your car slathered with mosquito carcasses in the trip to town! They are nearly as bad as Southeast Asia during the monsoon season. One would think that negative forty degrees would be sufficient to eradicate those suckers!! I gather in life we choose our battles, as well as places to live.

It is hard to imagine North Dakota would have mosquito problems. I heard Alaska has a bunch of them at times, but when i was there in the middle of one summer, I saw none.
Any cruise here on summer nights will mes your car up fast. I remember riding the bike around the lake last summer and I thought it was raining. No, just mosquitos hitting everything and bursting.

The south seems to be nothing but a bug breeding ground. Looks like we have to deal with them from now to November.
Another reason to move north when i retire.
