This site has always been friendly. Even before Dan and the guys took over the members kind of "policed" it themselves. The only rules I see are no politics, no religion and keep it friendly. If we follow those rules no one gets moderated. I'm a long time member and I'm not going anywhere. This is my favorite car forum. And Oldsmobiles are not the olny old cars I own.

I think Dan and the guys are doing a great job. Sad??? Not in my opinion, this is still the best car forum on the internet.

I don't understand the "Over-moderation" issue. I think we mod's are pretty darned easy going. Just try to keeps things friendly for the most part.

We are always looking for input. So offer some detail on your concerns, after all we are all volunteers.

Have a great day

Sorry I don't see it. People come and go all the time. I think the fourm has gotten better over the last couple of years. Like any large groups there are going to be differences of opinions and sometimes heated. Not everybody is going to be happy all the time it's just life.

I agree. I think it's gotten more activity and members over the last year and I think the Moderators are pretty 'invisible'. I'm on several automobile and aviation forums and this one, by far, is the least confrontational and most friendly and enjoyable (a LOT less 'troublemakers' on here).

IMO this is one of the best car forums I have come across.
I am a member of several forums relevant to my car, this one seems to have the best combination of helpful, knowledgable & good humoured posts.
The forum is like a living organism, constantly changing and evolving as circumstances change. If it changes for the better it will thrive, if for the worse it will wither and eventually die.
We are all free to come and go as we please, you can't please all the people all of the time.

Well, the way I see it F85, your post has been on here for about 24 hours, so far the majority of folks on here seem not to agree with you and have also been very RESPECTFULL of your opinion! The moderators have been very tolorent in enforcing the few general rules that apply.

So can we now put this issue to rest? I have found there is something for everyone on this site. I hope we all can agree, its ok to have opinions, we all have our own, however, the bashing, public ridicule, and inuendo must stop!

This only my opinion!

Its probably because the guys who care just dont come back anymore. This site was all about Oldsmobiles and preserving Oldsmobiles. Talk, learn, laugh, love Oldsmobiles. I know the company is gone. But lets not let the spirit go. It seems that alot of the new members coming in are JUST car people (even a mod) not True Lovers of Oldsmobiles. Sure they like them. They might one one. But its no more special then there new ss camaro, or old Vette. It use to be the general census around here was, putting an non Olds engine in a Oldsmobile was just forbidden! Now we have a section for it! How retarded is that! One of the moderators is the one who started it and pushed for it. Even going around PM members trying to recruit them to the idea. The new section has not helped the situation, it made it worse! It pissed off alot of the hardcore Olds guys, even to the point they left or just dont post anymore. Is that what we want here. Push away the Hardcore Oldsmobile guys! Guys with 30-40 years of Oldsmobile knowladge, just to bring in the pro touring croud so we can learn how to put a LS motor in an Oldsmobile? Again thats retarded! This is the only site on the web like this. And soon it wont be. It will just be another A body forum that has Oldsmobile in the name. People can do whatever they want with their cars. There is plenty of website for other stuff IE protouring, LS a body swaps, sbc in abodys. If you are really into that stuff just talk about it there. Here all i wanna see is Oldsmobiles and Olds Power!

I'm a newbie but very impressed with this forum. Great information and support along with mostly good natured banter. The non-olds powered sub forum serves its purpose well. While original is great whenever possible, conversions often keep classics on the road that might otherwise end up in the junkyard.

Only other forum that comes close is the Pelicans 911 group, but I came to my senses with the Olds purchase.

Silver lining to the cloud of engine swaps.........I recently purchased a 67 400 take out engine that was replaced by a Chev454 in a rough clapped out 67 442, also purchased a 65 400 the was replaced by a sbChev in a old hot rod 39 Ford. And a 68 400 engine that was living in a 56 Chevy.

F-85 I assume you are referring to me as the mod that's just a car guy. You got me guilty but you are 100% wrong about the new forum. I did help to make it happen in the end but it was because for the last year these conversations came up on a regular basis and did nothing but disrupt the site. At first it was evey few weeks but when it became near daily something had to be done. You can't change the trends that are out there but we can corral them to one area. I along with other mods and suggestions of other members helped to create the new section to clean up the site and get back to business. If you look back at my build thread you can see clearly that my car was an Olds powered Pro-Touring car so saying this is all about me and my Pro-touring influence is ridiculous.

Since it was started with the exception of a few flare ups the board has run much smoother until the last few weeks you want to bring it up in every other thing you post.

Like I side in the other post if you don't like the current trends stick around. Things change over time. Look at how many TPI swap cars were built in the early 90's. When was the last time you saw one of them

Speaking of which, does anyone have a statistic as to how many Olds from the various years are still on the road?

I know for '72, i once heard a statistic that something like 6000 Cutlass 'S' Were sold here in Canada, but i have no clue as to how many are left.

I'm also pretty sure that more people ordered the cutlass with the 4-4-2 package that not. Anywho, just curious.

Cheers,

Tony

This is one of two boards I read. It is the better of the two, the Ranchero forum I use see's a quarter of the use it did in its heyday. Due to 5 members that drove most of the members off the board. Their insults and thread hijacking ruffled many feathers.

Thankyou F85 for understanding! We have an opportunity here to educate and lead the next generation of OLDS owners. I've noticed more and more younger newbies on the forum. The majority of posts here are 100% Olds, and yes, the primary responsibility of this site is to preserve as much of Olds as possible.

However, I believe there is a place on this forum to preserve the cars that otherwise would have gone to the crusher, had it not been for alternatives! I also believe that every car owner has the inalienable right to do what he, or she wants with their own vehicle! Hey, there are mods performed on old cars that turn my stomach also, however, I try and show the mutual respect expected towards my decisions!

Also, as Richard and others say, we may have to rethink fuel requirements in the future just to enjoy our own stuff.

It is my sincere wish that this site outlives all of us!!!!!

I've only been around this forum for about 10 months, but find it's one of the best!
Little argueing, some whining, but nothing that can't be ignored.
And I, like many others, would like to 'reach out and touch' some that don't listen, but it's their car!
I like to learn, and give my 45 years experiences to those that haven't 'been there'.
I enjoy reading about the LS swaps - what hot rodding was all about in the first place! You don't - skip it!
At least it's GM - can't imagine if Ford made the LS series motor!!

Richard

Yes i was referring to you. You have made it very clear that you like the LS swaps. You personally lead to the new forum. You PMed Me personally trying to recruit me into it. I personally told you i was aginst it. The next day we had the new forum. You have ignored the LS builds in the build section and let them go on, untlil i complaned about them being there, but you only moved one, because you thought the other build info was useful. But you happen to be right there when someone speaks aginst the swaps even to the point of closeing threads because they dont agree with your opinion. (Case in point the thread you closed yesterday) We should have a right to an opinion! This is an Oldsmobile site!!!

I think there is better ways to contol stuff like that other then giving them a section on our site! We could start a thread on all the misinformation people hear about Oldsmobile engines. And every time someone posts about it, we can post a link to that section. Problem solved. By making the new Non Olds section you have done more damage then good. You pissed off alot of the hardcore Olds guys. To the point some left and other just dont post anymore. The new section has pushed away some of the long time members. Guys with 30-40 years of Oldsmobile knowlage just to cater to your average car guy. Yeah he might own an Oldsmobile, but it isnt any more special to them then their new SS camaro, or old Vette. Think about it!!! I have only seen you come to the defence of the LS stuff and not once to the defence of Oldsmobile engines. Over and over i hear they are not reliable, poor gas milage, expensive. And You know better then that richard. But you say nothing.

And when i say Car guys i dont mean anything bad. Just this is a Oldsmobile site. Not a LS site or protouring site. if they like that stuff fine. Just talk about it on the other forums that are based on that kind of stuff.

We as a community should try and educate people on Oldsmobiles. Its our responsability to try and preserve what we can! We should not condone LS swaps or chevy swaps. We should educate people more and let them know that Oldsmobile engines can be reliable, you can get decent gas milage out of them, they are not that expensive! Buy putting the new section we are not educating people anymore basically we are condoning this kind of thing. Maybe some of the mods should think about this!

My .02 Im new to oldsmobile not old cars. Im not new to internet forums as I am a member of several sites, I base my membership on site content and activity along w "atmosphere" I dont have much/any room for haters thats not what I join for

I searched for an OLDS forum with knowledgable helpful people, I have found it here at classic Olds.

To date the only glitch I have seen (without stating user names) is when someone who doesnt endorse a particular genre continually offers unsolicited negative comments, it adds nothing to the conversation and reduces the overall thread appeal IMHO.

That said Im all about keeping things original, I like that. I also like modifications that provide usefullness, weather it be economy, value, comfort, power or a user preference mod like purplepaint. if you like it OK if I dont thats OK too Im sure we can agree on some other subject matter

All that said I dont see why a non olds powered thread is any issue, as stated its hotrodding. Im 100% certain no-one has a 100% original car nothing ever changed ever so in essence every car on here is modded maybe w a factory replica part or store brand brake pads or non original tires but still not original.

The sticker on my car says keep your car all GM well an LS motor in an OLDS is all GM.

I value every members opinion I learn something everday here at classic olds.

In short I like it just the way it is !!!

You just don't get it. I pushed for the separate section to keep the integrity of the site. Open up any magazine of go to any large show. You can see what the trends are. Near every day a new poster was coming in asking about swaps. We could have continued that path that was nothing but arguing all over the site or do something about and we did.

Yes I PMed several members including you asking about what you though. You didn't think it was a good idea but many others did.

As for the Olds motor I challange you to show many any post where I said Olds motors were unreliable and too expensive to build. The only time you might see me mention cost of build is to make big power with an Olds vs BBC or LS. I can build a 9-10sec street car for what it cost to make an Olds go 11's to go 9-10's with an Olds takes deeeeep pockets. Most of that is because of heads ava. If the heads that are being worked on right now can make the power and at the right price point then that may change.

The only time you see me defending a LS thread is me defending the right for someone to do with thier car as they please. For me I am bored with LS swaps with the exception all out performance.

Damn those LSers... Soon they are gonna want to vote & use the same bathroom & water fountain as us!

I think we should go build a giant lower case t on their front yards and set fire to it. t for "Time to leave"....

F85, you really need to lighten up.
I've never understood intolerant people. Doesn't it take a heck of a lot more effort to complain stir this stuff up than it does to just ignore it?

Then again, I'm a lazy bastard so I always take the easy route.

I really cannot see anyone leaving the site because of this minor little thing.

Honestly, I think there have been a lot LESS arguments about this since the mods created that section and it stays in there.

It was not ignored, you are not paying attn to what the other members are trying to tell you! We are agreeing with you that the site is all of what you say!!!! With the exception that tolerance is necessary towards other ideas.

There have been 339 views to your thread and 26 responses, the only real negative response is yours! I think that says alot!

For what it's worth, I bet what F85 is saying is what a bunch of us are thinking. I've kept my mouth shut until now.

I personally was pretty surprised to see that non-Olds powered category pop up. The first thing I see when I come to the site is a list of new threads, and that thread seems to get a lot of posts. Tucking it away in a separate area doesn't hide it from those of us who don't want to see it.

I have nothing but respect for hot rodders and custom builds. I just don't think dumping on Olds engines for poor fuel economy, overall cost, and sub par performance (vs. modern engines) has a place on a "classic Olds" site and the LS builds belong on a pro touring forum. Sure it's "progress" but personally I like the history and simplicity of these old Olds, and that's why I'm here.

So what you (and F85) are saying is, even though there is a place here for you and what you like, there should NOT be a place here for what some other folks like- which like it or not, are BOTH aspects of OLDSMOBILES.

The LS builds are being done on OLDSMOBILES. So like it or not, they do belong on an olds site. I don't have any desire to build an LS motor, any more than I have an interest in building a 40's Olds- but I still like to read about them and see photos, and for that reason I'm GLAD they are all here.

I don't expect there to be a low rider forum or a Donk conversion forum either... but if those guys are interested enough in OLDSMOBILES in general to want to some and share their projects and share in what everyone else is doing i don't have a problem with it. Doesn't mean i won't make fun of them... but i won't be demanding they sell their cars and get away either.

Performanceyears has a non Pontiac powered forum. V8 Buick has a forum for non Buick CARS! ClassicOldsmobile has a forum for non Olds powered Oldsmobiles.

I remember when this forum got a handful of posts a WEEK. This place was nowheresville. Its better than its ever been. Even with a subforum genre that most large auto forums have.

i"m not going anywhere because i feel it is still the best Oldsmobile site on the net. at the same time when i first joined, if i had seen a non Olds powered section i would have had second thought about the forum. i am so hard core Oldsmobile only that when i found this place i was excited that it was exactly that. i am all for upgrades to some cars like suspension and more power but changing to a completely differant brand components turns me off real fast. maybe it is a double standard for me because if i had the chance to put a 455 in my 02 3/4 ton Chevy i would love to do it. but then it would be for the love of Oldsmobiles and the fact that Olds never had a truck and not because of a so called "cheeper.... easier....more reliable" reason.

I think I am a long time member here. I was not asked via a PM about a Non Olds section and was not happy to see it. But I dont run this site and can avoid those posts. I do voice an opinion on such swaps now and then when asked and I will never be ok with it. If someone chooses to build a turd and something that in my opinion would be hard to sell down the road so be it. Any Olds has the opportunity to be a classic if the owner chooses to make it one, it is their choice. I am not buying some lines of thoughts that what they have will never be anything special, historical, classical. The decision on that and what their car is or will become is up to them. A engine swap is reversable for the most part.

Well, I am pretty new here and, I'll bet, one of the younger ones, too. I came here to learn about my favorite car model ever - the Oldsmobile Cutlass.

I guess, since Olds was already using GM Corporate engines and transmissions for as long as I can remember, the whole Olds/Non-Olds thing is not as concerning to me.

Having said that, I am very interested in building a pure-Olds 455 for my Cutlass. I like the concept of rebuilding something that wasn't working and making it work once again - old technology or not - so for me the decision was always clear.

Since joining here, I have met so many great folks with excellent ideas and willingness to help with even the most newbie-type questions. There are very few forums like that. Heck, someone here even sent me a part I needed just because I couldn't find it anyplace else. And he didn't ask for anything in return. You don't see that very often.

For what its worth, I barely even bother with other forums (Olds or otherwise) anymore.

So you are no different than the people you despise. Maybe the people putting LS1s in Oldsmobiles love LS1s and they do it because Olds never made an engine like it. You cant say putting an Olds in a Chevy is cool but putting a Chevy in an Olds is blasphemy.

i understand but at the same time my 02 chevy truck is not a classic and i also am not going to join a pure chevy truck site and ask how to do it.

and i don't despise them... i just don't enjoy those cars or reading about them. i just skip those threads when i can.
