So long Andy, and thanks for the memories
Today marks the passing of another legend of Hollywood. Gone is Andy Griffith at the age of 86.
I've watched every episode of the Andy Griffith show and enjoyed them all. He was also a great Matlock. If he had been Ron Howard's real dad, he couldn't have done a finer job portraying life growing up in the 60's.
RIP Andy, your shoes are big ones to fill.

Apparently he was as nice a guy in real life as he was on TV. The first time I ever saw him was in the movie No Time For Sergeants.
RIP Andy. You made the world a better place and made us all laugh.

So who, among the adult characters on that show, is still with us?
Don Knotts died in 2006.
George Lindsey (Goober) died just last May.
Aunt Bee (Frances Bavier) died in 1989.
Floyd the barber (Howard McNear) died way back in 1969.
Elinore Donahue (Ellie Walker) was on the show for a while. She's still alive at age 75.
Jim Nabors (Gomer) is 82 and still with us.
Helen Crump (Aneta Corsaut) died in 1995.
Howard Sprague (Jack Dodson) died in 1994.
Paul Hartman (Emmett Clark, the fix-it guy) died in 1973.
Hal Smith (played Otis the drunk) died in 1994.
There are more, of course, but these are more or less the main characters.

How about "Ernest T. Bass"?
Close your eyes and listen to Andy and Michael Waltrip---sound EXACTLY the same!!!And kinda resemble each other enough to be related.
Andy was from a purely naive time in America and I, for one think it was a better time. He was humor was always CLEAN, FUNNY, and taught something in the underlying storyline. "No time for Seargents" is a prime example of what I'm saying.

...although on a few episodes he did strap one on.
Mayberry was kind of like "Cheers". A town where everybody knew your name, your age, your weight, what you did for a living, who you were seeing, who you broke up with, who was a floozy....you know, all the gossip stuff. Now you get all that on the daily news.
Andy Griffith Show was one of a long line of early favorites like:
Petticoat Junction
Green Acres
I Love Lucy
Beverly Hillbillies
McHales Navy
The Adams Family
The Munsters
Get Smart
......so many to choose from....
I'm one of those who loves to watch the re-runs. I never get tired of watching scenes that trigger memories of my youth.

I agree, TV isn't worth watching these days. I haven't had cable or anything for the last 7 or 8 years. Not worth the money. If I want to watch something I can usually find it on YouTube. RIP Andy.
R.I.P Andy
Yea I grew up watching Andy Griffith show . Who could ever forget that whistle at the beginning of the show
. That show reminded me of my dad also R.I.P , for he always had that show on when i'd come through the door to visit ( again the whistle ) R.I.P Andy Griffith .

I don't think that was supposed to be the Andy Griffith character actually whistling as he walked along with Opie with fishing poles on their shoulders during the opening credits.
First, you can see Andy's lips move as though he's talking to Opie, especially when Opie throws the rock in the water. He can't be whistling AND talking to Opie at the same time.
Second, as the whistling progresses and goes to the chorus, a second whistler joins in as a harmony. If Andy is the main whistler, who's the second whistler? Opie? Some guy in the woods out of sight who just happens to be there? Aunt Bee?

It's magic. Television of the 60's was pure magic. The secret of the whistling and the second whistler was.........aarghh the producer is waving caveats at me......
My best guess is: Andy was a whistler - well known fact. So he was recorded and the second whistle was dubbed over top. Ever notice how similar the tones are??
I'm sure that Andy and Opie would probably have stopped and looked at the sky in awe when they heard a voice from the heavens boom "The Andy Griffith Show".
Yup, it's pure magic I tell ya.

How many of you knew there were words to the theme song?
